MSI MOA Benelux qualifier 2011

Tradeshow & OC events by leeghoofd @ 2011-03-30

It's that time of the year again. Overclockers all over the world gearing up to get them precious tickets for the World Finals in Taipei. But before taking the KLM 747 to Taiwan, there's a long road ahead. For our Benelux clockers an online event was created at the Tweakers.net website. As usual Superpi 32M was one of the chosen tests. The other one was the new 3DMark011 benchmark. Weapons of choice for this online qualifier would be either a very fast SandyBridge CPU or an insanely fast ( read +6.4Ghz) Gulftown.  Since only single GPU cards were allowed GTX 580 was an obvious choice. Two teams from Madshrimps, Massman & Pt1t and Gamer & Leeghoofd submitted a score to grab at least one of the three spots for the Benelux qualifier at the MSI HQ in the Netherlands. Last wednesday we got the official mail from MSI that both the [M] teams were selected. Two belgian teams vs one Dutch Team consisting of Viss and Expat_Griz. How did the belgian waffles do in last saturdays event, time to read on...

Surprise surprise

Niels and Dennis from MSI explained us what was expected of us that day. 5 rounds would have to be completed to select the best team for Istanbul.

Round 1 : assemble as quick as possible the setup so it's able to boot into windows and shows the MSI logo. the winners get 1 point for completing this.

Round 2 : Low consumption test : We had to keep powerdraw as low as possible, yet be able to complete the GT3 test of 3Dmark06 at at least a steady 60fps. Failing to maintain 60FPS in two runs would leave to disqualification in thsi round. These results were kept secret as the lowest scoring team would get 3 points, the runner up 1 point.

Round 3 : Running contest. Yes, indeed get your sorry ass to a motherboard about 100 meters away and press the OC genie button as quick as possible. The fastest team would score 1 point. But since we were all in such a healty shape, we arranged it only to be used in case of a draw...

Round 4 : Superpi 1M. MSI had high hopes for us beating the european top score. We directly inquired for the CPU batches, being retail or not. Engineering samples B1, immediately made us all shakes our heads. Impossible sadly... Max CPU clocks would rule this one...

Round 5 : 3DMark011 Extreme. The GTX 480 Lightning card was allowed to be modded if needed and to be baptised under LN2. Raw GPU power extravaganza required...

Operating system installed on the SSD was Windows 7 64 bit, Nvidia drivers used were the 266.58 WHQL ones. All the software besides CPU and GPU-Z were preinstalled.
