Handmade LaserLike Cut-out

Howto by Jakkerd @ 2003-02-16

I got the idea for this little project, when I realized I had no powertools whatsoever. Although I didn’t have any powertools, I still wanted to cut a nice logo out off my case. Here I'll show you how I accomplished this...

Cutting, Biting & a file

Now we can finally move to the part where can you actually cut something apart.
You start off by scraping material of the topside, but be careful, the knife easily slips across the entire face-plate, and we don’t want that to happen.
If you scrape off enough material, you should be able to gently push the point of you’re knife through the plate. Do this twice, so that you become two small cuts next to each other.

Carefully push out the middle piece (or cut, or whatever, just be careful), too get you’re first small hole.

Take you’re knife again, and slowly start cutting the hole, making it bigger.

Now finish the hole, to get your first ruff form.

The best way to cut is to start at the side and cut towards the middle.
Something like this:

After some hard work, the major cutting should be done.

For the last step, you should take your file(s), and start cleaning up those ugly edges.
For the inner curves, you can use a half-round file, or the knife. The knife is the most easy to find, but it takes lots of patience to get a nice curve.

Well, that’s about it. After lots off cursing (and patience off course), I ended up with this:

I hope you found this how-to useful. It doesn’t tell you how to use advanced professional tools, but you can get some pretty amazing results, with some practice off course. Any questions/comments can be freely posted here (link) @ the forums)

note: sorry about the blurry & woozy pictures, I didn't quite figured the camera out until I was half way through with this how-to.

Here’s an other one I did (logo from a Belgian beer brand):
