I was planning to buy my MSI K8N Platinum & Radeon X800 XT PCI-E on snogard.de .... I didn't order them yet but.. should I better go for that UK site? I heard terms like Pixel Shader 2.0 (x800) and that games like far cry & unreal 3 engine have pixel shader 3.0.. maybe better buying a card with pixel shader 3.0? geforce 6800 GT that is.

where to buy is up to you, buy where they have what you want and where it's cheapest but it's probably the easiest to order everything from the same shop if possible.

the difference between pixel shader 2.0(b?) or whatever extendend version it is that ati uses and pixel shader 3.0, to me, is just not there.

now they found out that you can up the performace in HL² for nvidia cards big time so maybe it's best to go with a 6800GT. Also, if you plan on keeping your card a couple of years, then the 6800GT is probably the better choice here also.

I wouldn't but the only reason for that is that I'm prejudiced and a bit of an AMD/ATI fanboy :king: Not fanatically though, I'm on intel atm :)

Anyway, I emailed snogard.de again (not a friendly service in my humble opinion).. yesterday they said the neo 4 mainboard will come back in-stock on 10th of december, today they said they don't know: suddently they removed that product from their website. I'll probably buy the Geforce 6800 GT PCI-E and a nForce 4 mobo on that website you gave me. ;)

EDIT: I was browsing on that sitem: overclockers UK and I saw that they have other nforce 4 mainboards besides MSI! Now I can choose.. which nforce 4 motherboard will I pick best? I don't want a SLI mainboard, I will not make use of it I guess. The ASUS mainboards are much expensive than those of MSI.. so I probably won't pick those one. there are also nForce mainboards of gigabyte: one of 150£, one of 130 and one of 76£!! (= http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Gigabyte1.html)

so.. you can compare the Gigabytes with the MSI: the gigabyte of 150£ is comparable with the MSI Diamond, the 130£ of gigabyte is comparable with the MSI Platinium.. and what about that mainboard that has nForce 4 that only costs 76£? Is it decent enough?

Also Foxconn has nForce 4 mainboards on that site.. : one of 70£ and one of 94£ (= http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...f_FoxConn.html)

And than there is ABIT.. they have one PCI-E mainboard for 78£ (= http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Abit.html)




It's pretty obvious that there are 3 classes in prices:
Class A (SLI) = around 150£ [ASUS, MSI, GIGABYTE]
Class B = around 130£ [ASUS, MSI, GIGABYTE]
Class C = 70-100£ [GIGABYTE, Foxconn, ABIT]

I don't know much about mainboards.. If you don't have any knowledge about it you think it's not an important thing in your pc.. is it? I don't know which one I would pick.. I don't want crap of course.. but I also don't need something superb

about the price difference, the boards are all basically the same, they just have to do with less or without some features... (usb2.0 ports, sata ports, raid controllers, lan controllers, ...)

The Class C is enough for me than... Which type would I pick than? the Abit one? The Gigabyte one or the Foxconn? Which one has a gigabit ethernet controller?

all 3 have gigabit ethernet...

I'd go for the gigabyte though, gigabyte is usually quite featurerich. the board is, considering it's price, probably not from the top en range from gigabyte so you won't get any of the dual stuff but I think it will none the less be feature rich. Not much info on the gigabyte home site so I can't be sure offcourse.



but foxconn is'nt a big name around here (not that that means anything but hey, I need to motivate my choice no? ;))

and the abit comes with a via chipset, I prefer nvidia just because it's more overclocker oriënted then via :)

nForce3&4 chipset have gigabit lan.

if you read the comments for all 3 boards, you'll encounter the exact same line for every one of them ;)

and jmke already pointed out that nforce3&4 all have gigabit ethernet so I suppose it's enbedded in the nforce4 chip.
