Default AMD to delay Socket 939 release

Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices' 939-pin processors will probably be launched on 1st June and not on the 25th May due to minor setbacks, according to information procured from unofficial sources by XbitLabs. The release of its processors in new packaging with dual-channel memory controller maybe delayed yet another time but the delay is likely to be only slight.

AMD Athlon 64 processors with 939 pins will have 512KB of L2 cache as compared to today's 754-pin 1024KB L2 cache, however, the Dual-Channel memory controller will drastically decrease the impact of less L2 cache. The AMD Athlon 64 FX parts will continue to have 1MB of L2 cache after the transition to Socket 939.

According to existing estimates, only in the Q1 2005, the output of more advanced Athlon 64 processors will tangibly outstrip that of the AMD Athlon 64 chips with single-channel memory controller.

AMD claims that its first commercial 90nm microprocessors will show up in September-to-November timeframe. Majority of desktop AMD64 processors at 90nm nodes are projected to have dual-channel memory controller.
