ASRock 4Core1333-Viiv and Intel E4400 Performance Review

Motherboards/Intel S775 by SidneyWong @ 2007-08-31

ASRock is ready for a new series of board using Intel P965 chipset meeting Quad Core demands. ASRock 4Core 1333-ViiV packs with eSATAII, 6-SATA ports, Firewire, CrossFire & ViiV ready, Raid 0, 1, 10 & 5, and bundled with DeskExpress Card. We feature this review with a mainstream CPU, the Intel E4400 CPU plus more. Let´s find out what kind of performance this entry level combination of board & CPU can deliver.

Overclocking Continues

The E4400 is an OEM processor comes in without Intel Retail heatsink fan. Normally, the E4000 stock cooler would be with copper insert unlike the all aluminum one found with E2000 series. I am going to use the SHS-T700 CPU Cooler from LG Cable rated similar to the Intel Retail copper insert heatsink fan. This is an older model with back plate and screw mount while new model mounting is identical to Intel stock cooler.

The 90mm clipped on fan has a maximum ~2,400 RPM rotation speed. It is a low profit all copper heatsink utilizes three heatpipes.

At default vcore, I set the FSB to 266. System booted up with no problem using the stock Intel HSF from the E2140.

I continued using the same method on the Pin Mod. This time I brought it up to 1.55V to compensate for some vdroop. The system will boot up at 333 FSB but unstable. The temp was not a problem, the vdroop was. OCCT would crash when Vcore dropped below 1.5v. 326 FSB is the ideal setting at this level of voltage.

The Intel Retail Pack stock HSF should have no problem handling the load at this speed and vcore. I am also quite sure raising more vcore might further push the FSB higher. However, it will require better cooling adding cost to the package. 1.25GHz over default speed is more than acceptable.

Comment from Sidney @ 2007/09/01
One of our readers was kind enough to let us know the the wrong specification was posted on the review, and not having to mention the Intel 82655DC Gigabit LAN favored by many than 3rd party manufacturers suggesting a unique price point for the board. This is exactly what I wanted to hear as the ability to overclock alone is not the only measurement many of us have in mind.

Correction has been made to the specifications, and the Intel LAN was noted. Additionally, he suggested that E4500 now comes with GO stepping with low voltage range a better match than the E4400.

Anyway, I like to thank him for his valuable opinion on top of the mistake I made.
