Motherboards Compared: 865PE and 915P chipset for Socket 775

Motherboards/Intel S775 by JNav89GT @ 2005-01-06

Socket 775 has given the troubled Prescott Pentium4 a much needed shot in the arm. With better voltage regulation and a new socket interface, we have hope this will cure what ails the Prescott CPU. Today we look at two viable alternatives for those looking to get into socket 775, without having to sell of a kidney to finance the transition.

Benchmarks continued

Super Pi 1mb is basically a tie across the board except at 240FSB where the Chaintech pulls ahead.

3DMark again has the Albatron board in the lead. The Chaintech board keeps up well though, and I don't think anyone would really notice the difference without side by side benching. I would also like to point out the Chaintech is handicapped by the 50MHz memory frequency deficit on the Gigabyte video card. This could explain some, but not all of the performance difference. As noted in prior reviews, NVIDIA cards seem to have issues running great than 240FSB on 915/925 chipset boards. Therefore, scores are absent for the Chaintech board in the 250FSB area in following benches.

Doom3 shows fair performance from both contenders. The Chaintech holds a very slim lead, but nothing of significance. If I would have been able to score a nice X800XT or 6800GT/Ultra in PCI Express flavor, the game benchmarks would be much more impressive. Alas, I'm not that fortunate yet, so we'll have to make due with what we have.

Far Cry 1.1 is basically a tie again, both board performing similarly which in my opinion is good. Why would this be good? Well let's discuss this further on the following page.
