Default Samsung working on PCIe 3.0 980 SSD

Non-PRO version with 3D TLC V-NAND

While Samsung 980 Pro SSD is aimed at those looking to pull performance from the PCIe 4.0 interface, it appears that Samsung is working on a 980 non-PRO version which will use PCIe 3.0 interface, lack a DRAM cache, and be based on Samsung's latest 136-layer TLC V-NAND.

The lack of DRAM cache and new TLC V-NAND will allow Samsung to bring decent performance at a more affordable price point with a 980 non-PRO SSD lineup.

According to Computerbase.de, citing retail sources, Samsung's 980 non-PRO will be available in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities, and offer sequential read and write performance of up to 3,500MB/s and 3,000MB/s.

These should eventually replace Samsung's 970 PRO lineup on the market, which is currently still selling at a reasonable price point.

- Samsung 970 PRO SSD 512GB - M.2 NVMe Interface Internal Solid State Drive with V-NAND Technology selling at Amazon.com for $149.99

- Samsung 970 PRO SSD 1TB - M.2 NVMe Interface Internal Solid State Drive with V-NAND Technology selling at Amazon.com for $249.99

According to details, Samsung is expected to announce its new 980 non-PRO SSD lineup before the end of this month.
