It was almost bound to happen, as judging by Nvidia's Intel chipset roadmap, the company only has high-end and entry-level chipset available on en-route, but from what we've been told, Nvidia is working on a cheaper version of the 790i chipset.
The new version is meant to come with a more basic southbridge and will as such only support a pair of x16 PCIe 2.0 slots, rather than a total of three PCIe x16 slots, of which the third one is PCIe 1.0 as in the current implementations.
