weird, I cannot get this board to boot.
plugged in ram, cpu, and hooked on superflower psu 520 watt, power button gives me nothing at all. no fans, no nothing.

Sidney 9th December 2004 20:34

Didn't the same PSU give you problem last time?

Cpu fan header must be connected, if not the pc could experience boot problems

if you have problems booting with BH5 try another stick of memory and set vdimm to the max and make sure you set the cas latency to 2.5 or 2.0 as bh5 wont boot with cas 3.0, then swap in the BH5.

if you experience problems with Antec Neopower and Truepower PSUs and also with PowerStream PSUs, try Bios 1.37 and turn the PSU off after you shut down, seems to help as well

The Senile Doctor 10th December 2004 06:24

only problem the psu gave was low +12v, now it does not boot at all, switching bios/setting cas is difficult if you don't even have fans spinning :(
cpu fan header is connected to enermax 92mm

Enermax fans connected to the mainboard have given boot issues before, try another fan!

No other psu around?

The Senile Doctor 10th December 2004 11:17

I know, but not hooking up the enermax gives the same problem.
moreover, when I partially plug in the power (partially) fans start spinning on psu and southbridge/cpu. but the system does however not boot or anything.
weirdissimo.

The Senile Doctor 10th December 2004 12:10

ok.
I sacrificed my 20 minutes afternoonbreak to even more irritation :(
trying with 1 adata ram, two adata rams, different slots, no ram at all, one stick of twinmoss : nuttin'.
plugging the mainboard (just mainboard + fan on cpu hooked onto cpufan, no more enermax used) into another psu : NOTHING, but a little later suddenly the board fans started whizzing and the characteristic sounds of a coldboot went off.
shorting the powersw 3 seconds made it go silent again, and reconnecting them led to direct bootup.
no conditions had changed compared to when it did not want to boot.
I was ofcourse happy even not knowing what the problem was/had been.
I decided to try unplugging the psu again and replugging it to confirm the working situation, so I turned it out shorting the pwrsw, I turned off the psu, I removed the powerplug from the psu some seconds, put it back in, gave the cpu power again, tried to reboot : again nothing.

What is going on?
Is this board fubar?

I simply hate this, I have about 30 minutes free time every day... and I have to fill it up with solving crappy problems :( :( :(
do I have to buy everything twofold to make sure something works???µ
damn
and if I had someone living close to me with soem hardware to check what was exactly wrong, it'd be easier too, I simply don't have any time

and so.... instead of being able to game a bit, I'll be crapping around with all this ****.

Bosw8er 10th December 2004 12:33

Shorting the pwrsw makes the board power on and off ... so it works !

Maybe the powerswitch of your case is broke.

easypanic 10th December 2004 13:48

I don't live too far from you calantak, if you would like to check something...

Gamer 10th December 2004 18:34

sorry to hear that Doc.

I have the same mobo here, you could test it ?
don't know how it could get to you though.

no time too :(

Sidney 10th December 2004 18:59

Didn't Jmke experience similar problem a few months back? The board worked on bench but failed to boot inside the case. He later found out the mounting screws too tight or too loose was affecting the board power circuit. Not saying this is normal.

This is a time consuming hobby ...:D

Had the same thing, using the middle atx-mobo-screw made my board non-working.
Unscrewing it : everything works fine.

Took me quite some time before i found that one.
.. a little longer than the time i was testing a rig and the mouse didn't work ... after a while i found out i had TWO defective mice ... 2 !! (TWO !!) (and that's the only time i EVER had a defective mouse anyway)

Sidney 10th December 2004 19:55

I can remember what I read and did months and years ago; I could not remember what I did minutes and days before.

Conclusion:
Old AGE.:D

Perfectly illustrating why you post this ... in a thread about a non working mobo :D

I have the same thing and I'm not old :)

The Senile Doctor 11th December 2004 06:31

ok

to demystify : the mobo was never inside any case, it's sitting on my bench on an antistatic bag.

I installed an entire winxp with all bells and whistles tonight, sp1,2 drivers and so on.
this happened with the big mobo powerplug HALF INSERTED.
the mobo NEVER reacts with the powerplug decently inserted.
sometimes the fans start spinning with the powerplug partially inserted, sometimes they don't.
so the install worked. then I accidently touched the box on which the mobo was lying with an elbow and directly everything turned off again, unable to boot.
so it worked, rebooted, installed perfectly for 4-6 hours this night (no I didn't sleep, and still have to work :( ), but now it's again to stage 0, meaning it again won't boot, playing with the powerplug moving it around little bits gets the fans spinning, however it won't boot now, the booting was a luck-thing.

another weird thing was that the corecell utility of msi gave me 3 volts on the processor read-out when I was installing. this probably was a wrong readout.

is the mobo powerplug damaged? (probably)
somebody close to me has a socket 939 mobo?

it only worked that time with the powerplug in the mainbaord at just the right angle, then everything seemed to work, now nothing does.

Sidney 11th December 2004 07:01

The only thing I could think of may be "funny"...

1) are the plug or socket of the power source properly grounded (earth wire)..... try using another "wall" outlet or change the power plug from PSU to wall outlet. Improper grounding will have the same simptom you are experiencing.

2) Try using an aligator clip grounding the mobo to psu housing and see if this would help.

3) Check all the "pins" of the 20-pin connector and see if all the pins (females) are pushed all the way down to make good contact with the "male" pins socket on the board. (this is where I thought was funny ....... you know, Male/Female :D) saying it to a MD.

The Senile Doctor 11th December 2004 07:08

wall outlet?
earth wire?
alligator clip?
I am a medical doctor. not an electrician :)
I have never grounded anything.
pleasy teach me proper grounding :)

Sidney 11th December 2004 07:39

Wall outlet = the connection from your PSU to the power source or surge protector to the power source.

Earth wire = the third wire or the ground wire (there are three wires in AC "alternate Current" hot/return/ground - in North America they are in White/Green/Black color .... the black is the ground or earth.

Alligator clip = a clip on connector looks like the mouth of an alligator = firm bite :D

Example = all water cooling pumps (sold in the U.S.) must have "good ground" otherwise, the pump does not run, i.e. two wires socket does not turn the pump on. It requires a 3-wire plug and grounded socket. Improper ground wiring in the house will not turn the pump on.

This applies to both 110 and 220 volts.

I hope I spelled it out right .... ;)

The Senile Doctor 11th December 2004 10:44

well.
I reapplied everything.
I changed the walloutlet, used another wire to wall outlet, I grounded the mainbaord to the psu casing with single electrical wire

the problem remains.
what is weird is that this night I really succeeded in installing windows and doing everything with that half-inserted 20 pin connector, and during install I rebooted at least 10 times without flaw. now all I get when reinserting the power connector (only when I reinsert it partially, not when I reinsert it totally)is fans of psu that start buzzing or all fans on cpu-psu-southbridge that start buzzing , diskstation going on, but without booting.
when all fans are working however now it does not boot, even when I reset or try the power button again.

damn, if only I had a shop nearby with stock of socket 939 mainboards, I'd just buy a 2nd one and a new ocz psu to go with it, and I'd be at ease, I could still sell it again when the problem is solved :(

remind me never to buy abroad again, if this mobo is all fuxored, sending it back to germany is gonna cost me more than the pricedifference.

Sidney 11th December 2004 17:50

Sorry to hear that.:(

The Senile Doctor 11th December 2004 18:21

it's just such a weird thing, it's as if it gets enough power to make fans buzz, but not to power the entire MB...

but how come it worked yesterday?

The Senile Doctor 12th December 2004 11:01

I have reseated the sytem about a quazillion times now.
borke it down to all its parts, reseated everything looking for possible damage, errors, and so on.
nothing.

Gamer 12th December 2004 12:03

what are the numbers under the barcode ?
starts with K0.........

The Senile Doctor 12th December 2004 13:23

there are multiple stickers with barcodes.
one says : CP0000000554318

other says : 719072010294

last one says : 54g- K0409903072, it's probably this last one?

Gamer 12th December 2004 13:29

there are problems with some versions, that's what I heard.

yep, 0409 isn't good, it has problems running at 220 fsb, so maybe even at 200 fsb, don't know.
try lowering your fsb, maybe it helps to get it to boot and update the bios (if you get it to boot in the first place).

in my humble opinion board is borked, try to RMA it
what shop does it come from ?

where did you read this?

The Senile Doctor 12th December 2004 13:52

I cannot lower the fsb coz it simply DOES NOT Power up.
it doesn't even get to booting, fans spin and nothing else works, vcomes from cyberport, german shop, goddamn ****aroo, sending this back to germany suxx
I'm getting a 2nd one in Belgium first, but which board???

jmke 12th December 2004 14:05

try the Epox in my humble opinion

The Senile Doctor 12th December 2004 14:25

I just need it to be available, I'll do a netsweep and see where I can get it (in Belgium, never any abroad ordering from now on)

edit : I ordered one epox socket 939 from mpl.
and from now on, I'll order everything from belgian shops.

easypanic 19th December 2004 15:15

I'm having same issues as you my friend.
My computer refused to boot, I had to reseat the power switch on and on and on....'till suddenly it worked. :) . But occasionally my pc still hangs and won't boot :(.

Hope my winnie rocks
:super:

The Senile Doctor 19th December 2004 15:57

it will return and suddenly it will not boot at all.
waiting for epox board, this one is sucky.

easypanic 19th December 2004 16:12

Rockstable for the moment, I had to remove one DDR-stick....
:wtf:

The Senile Doctor 19th December 2004 16:44

does it not want to boot with two sticks?
which sticks?

easypanic 19th December 2004 16:48

Yes,it boots with two sticks , TCCD Vitesta DDR566..

I just found out that MSI uses a stupid color combination for dual channel mode (purple + green = dual channel :grum:). My stickies were in the purple holders :(.

Well, changing the HTT Multi to 3x helped ALOT:
boxed cooler :)

The Senile Doctor 19th December 2004 17:12

very very nice.
bt I'm stuck here since two weeks with same ram, same cpu, and no booting mainboard and I'm STILL waiting for that epox. if only the asus a8v was locked...

easypanic 20th December 2004 12:16

Why didn't you buy it @ The Shop, I saw it there when I got my stuff....

The Senile Doctor 20th December 2004 14:22

the epox?

easypanic 20th December 2004 18:49

Yup
