Mediatek has announced its new Helio P22 SoC which could be the beating heart of plenty of entry-level and mid-range future smartphones.

Similar to the earlier announced Helio P60, the new Helio P22 SoC is also manufactured on TSMC's 12nm manufacturing process but will target the entry- and mid-range smartphone market with its octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU clocked at up to 2.0GHz, and PowerVR GE8320 GPU clocked at up to 650MHz. It also supports 4/6GB of LPDDR3/LPDDR4x memory.

As it aims for the affordable smartphone market, the Helio P22 SoC supports 1600x720 resolution screens in 20:9 aspect ratio as well as up to a 13+8-megapixel dual-camera system or a single 21-megapixel one unless Bokeh effect is not an option. Mediatek also included plenty of other features including Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), new Rolling Shutter Compensation (RSC) engine, Instant Auto Exposure (AE), which uses hardware Camera Control Unit (CCU).

As it is the case with all current and upcoming SoCs, AI has become a big thing so the Helio P22 also packs light AI-enhancements such as Face ID (Face Unlock), Smart Photo Album, and Single-Cam/Dual-Cam Bokeh, as well as Mediatek NeuroPilot.

As far as connectivity goes, the Helio P22 packs LTE Cat-4 (Cat-7 DL/Cat-13 UL), GPS, Beidou, Galileo and GLONASS, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, FM radio and more.

While the company did not talk about any specific smartphones that could be powered by the Helio P22, it did say that the chip is already in volume production and is expected in the first devices by the end of June.
