ATI HD 5870 Benchmarks Hit The Web

Quote:

Roughly,
HD 5870: +10% to +155% over GTX 285 (in 17 games, total 40 configurations), -25% to +95% compared to GTX 295* with AA/AF enabled (AA: 2x-8x, AF: 8x/16x, in 16 games)
HD 5870 CrossFireX: (2 GPU) +/-0% to +90% over GTX 295 SLI*, (3 GPU) +10% to +160% over GTX 295 SLI* (in 15 games)

HD 5850: -25% to +120% over GTX 285 (in 19 games, total 50 configurations)

Here are a few HIGH resolution pics of the HD 5870
some interesting comments on the pics:

Very nice pics. =)
By 28cm you mean the whole card, and not just the PCB, that is, including the mounting bracket and DVI connectors sticking outside the case? The PCB alone should be 26.5cm.

And those pics confirmed the construction of the VRM:
● 4 "digital" vGPU phases with Volterra VT1157SF (never seen these before...), option for a 5th vGPU phase
● new type of vGPU inductor package
● 1 "digital" uncore (GDDR5 IMC?) phase with Volterra VT1157SF, option for a 2nd
● 1+1 "digital" GDDR5 vDD+vDDQ phases with Volterra VT242WF
● 2× Volterra VT1165MF controllers (vGPU & uncore)
● the card is SOFTMOD COMPLIANT, YAY!
● 2×6pin, option for 6pin+8pin - not that it matters, though

It's a strong PWM, overall. The PCB supports VT1195SFs aswell instead just the VT1157SFs installed, so there's an open upgrade path for even more stronger parts.

"Someone calculated that the steps on the vertical axis are 20% (except for the first one which must be 100%). If AMD had chosen 5% for each step, the HD 5870 would have looked even more impressive. Good card. Stupid Graph."

Graph is LOL

thorgal 14th September 2009 13:50

That graph is the most misleading I've seen in quite a while. Looks like 5870 would double or more the fps compared to 285, which clearly is NOT the case.

Thanks MM for the clarification.

jmke 14th September 2009 13:52

yes the chart without the X axis starting at zero makes it a bit weird; it does show the GTX 285 is being outperformed in all the games listed, and more so when higher AA is enabeld.

the last two charts added above here ^ should give a more realistic view.
either way; it will be a close battle, if HD 5870 is $299 and GTX 285 remains at $299 also http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=Geforce+GTX+285

HAWX
GTX 285: 54
HD 5870 : 109
109/2 = 54.5 = more than double;)

Massman 14th September 2009 14:04

Those numbers can't be right; there must be something wrong with either the nvidia or ati results.

It's always like this: "next-gen owns current gen by doubling performance" ... never turns out to be the complete truth.

jmke 14th September 2009 14:11

Well, the numbers for GTX 285 are about right, between 50-60fps at 1920x1200 4xAA/16xAF; numbers for HD 4870 X2 are too high, should be lower, also 50-60fps. Single HD 4890 sucks in HAWX... 28fps, in that chart it's faster than GTX 285...

Massman 14th September 2009 14:14

I think that says it all ;-)

jmke 14th September 2009 14:17

here another source with HAWX 1920x1200 4xAA/16xAF
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/g....W.X,1337.html
GTX 285: 58.90
HD 4890: 37.90
HD 4870X2: 63.90

jmke 14th September 2009 18:20

okidoki back with some more info

Quote:

Ati 4890
1920*1200 4AA/16AF 37fps 1920 * 1200 4AA/16AF 37fps
1920*1200 4AA/1AF 67fps 1920 * 1200 4AA/1AF 67fps
http://translate.google.com/translat...ate.google.com

this would explain the chart and the numbers might be very real, but enabling AF kills performance of the HD 4890/4870X2 (and possibly HD 5870)

jmke 14th September 2009 19:28

The show continues with 3DMark Vantage results:

Tested on a Core i7 965 system with 6GB memory.

and then a comparo: Radeon HD 5870 vs Geforce GTX 295 and Radeon HD 5850 vs GTX 285

jmke 14th September 2009 19:33

product launch date:

Massman 14th September 2009 19:33

Vantage numbers seem correct

jmke 14th September 2009 19:39

same as the Czech gamer site; the HAWX results are also correct, without AF ATI does quite well there; but enable it and you lose 50% performance.
Looking forward to the HD 5870, fastest GPU and an impressive speed bump over the GTX 285, it even matches the 295 in some games/settings!
The HD 5850 will be priced $100 cheaper than GTX 285 but deliver same performance... ouch

leeghoofd 14th September 2009 21:08

Biased baby... but the cards look overal impressive, let the price wars begin...

Kougar 14th September 2009 22:28

Ouch... so used to be AA killed ATI's performance... now it is AF?? Almost everyone uses 16AF, I wonder what is going on with this. Perhaps an early driver issue??

Edit: I spoke to soon, AF doesn't seem to be killing performance in that large performance chart, sounds more like a single game issue now.

jmke 15th September 2009 08:17

yes, in most games 4xAF comes for free with recent VGA cards, and small performance drop for 8/16xAF, only in HAWX it seems to be an issue for ATI:)

jmke 15th September 2009 08:22

one last chart, HD 5870 CF vs GTX 295 SLI

jmke 19th September 2009 16:45

:-)

Diegis0n 19th September 2009 21:50

wow that's some nice editing :D i can still read HD 4850 on the side ... and gddr3 is also a give away

jmke 20th September 2009 08:37

the batmobile wasn't a give-away then? ;p

Diegis0n 20th September 2009 09:07

not really, i've seen so many crazy pictures :D

Kougar 21st September 2009 07:48

I think the batmobile was cool! To bad it wasn't the real box art :D

jmke 21st September 2009 16:34

Latest performance chart shows minimal impact going from 4xAA to 8xAA in games

But I would rather see 0xAA vs 4xAA, visual difference between NoAA and 4xAA is very noticeable; between 4xAA and 8xAA... not so obvious, especially in faster games

blind_ripper 21st September 2009 17:53

launch tomorrow :D.

jmke 21st September 2009 18:41

no [M] review in sight :(

leeghoofd 21st September 2009 18:43

maybe we can get some ones at MSI headquarters this week ?

Massman 21st September 2009 18:54

i doubt it

leeghoofd 21st September 2009 18:58

maybe wear some shorts and a fancy t-shirt ? but shave them arms and legs man !!

Gamer 21st September 2009 19:42

Take the girlfriend with you ?

blind_ripper 21st September 2009 23:26

maybe u should send me then :D, in a suite i look good :D.

leeghoofd 21st September 2009 23:50

I want a second opinion on that matter !!

thorgal 22nd September 2009 07:01

By the way guys, launch is tomorrow, not today ;-)

jmke 22nd September 2009 08:51

depends on where you live ;)

Xploited Titan 22nd September 2009 11:52

I've been using nVidia h/w for ages due to ATI not resolving issues with some of the games I play.

How is it nowadays?

Got a GTX 260 for a few months now, and not really eager to spend money on a new card right away, but wondering if it's interesting to switch from one brand to the other.

jmke 22nd September 2009 12:55

what issues are you referring to? In the 15+ games I tried and tested for the video card comparison (http://www.madshrimps.be/gotoartik.php?articID=953 ) I've not encountered any issues specific to ATI hardware.

The Senile Doctor 22nd September 2009 19:03

aha! maybe this will replace the 9800gx2!

jmke 23rd September 2009 06:57

wait for the HD 5870 X2, then you are safe;)

Massman 23rd September 2009 07:51

Apart from the countless mugger SLASH gamers that will visit your house at night ;)
