Apple is getting ready to break the App Store "in two" in the next few weeks before European Union rules that will make Apple let users download apps from anywhere.

According to "Power On" Apple is changing the App Store in the EU to follow the region's coming Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Apple is planning to make changes to follow the new legal rules in the next few weeks, including breaking off the App Store in the EU from the rest of the world. The deadline for Apple to follow the DMA is 7 March. The firm has just over seven weeks to make the changes.

Last week, Apple boss Tim Cook met the European Union's competition boss, Margrethe Vestager, at Apple Park. Vestager told Cook that Apple had a duty to let users install other app stores and download apps from anywhere under the DMA.

Apple must let developers promote their offers outside the App Store and use other payment systems. The DMA is expected to make Apple make big changes to the way the App Store, FaceTime, and Siri work in Europe.
