Default VIA Announces Support from Industry Leader for PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Implement

VIA collaborates with Broadcom to Enable PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet support with the VIA K8T890 Chipset for Leading Performance and Features

Taipei, Taiwan, December 8 2004, - VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of silicon chip technologies and PC platform solutions, today announced support from networking industry leader Broadcom to provide PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet with the VIA K8T890 Series of chipsets.

As data transfer requirements become ever higher, the market is making the transition from 10/100 to Gigabit Ethernet for optimal performance. Through PCI Express x1 connections the VIA K8T890 chipset enables optimal Gigabit Ethernet connectivity with 250MB/s bandwidth per direction, satisfying even the most intense data transfer requirements.

Working together with leading networking technology provider, Broadcom, VIA and its motherboard partners offer market leading Gigabit Ethernet solutions featuring comprehensive driver support, extensive feature sets, and high speed robust performance.

“For the K8T890 Series of chipsets VIA felt that offering Gigabit Ethernet support through the PCI Express x1 interfaces was the optimal solution for our motherboard partners and users,” commented Chewei Lin, Vice President of Product Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. “By offering Gigabit Ethernet through the PCI Express x1 connections, we give our motherboard partners flexibility to choose ideal solutions for their platforms such as from networking industry leader Broadcom, who enables solutions with exceptional performance and solid features.”

“Through joint validation and delivery of the PCI Express interface, Broadcom is able to unleash the full performance of our NetXtreme™ and NetLink™ Gigabit Ethernet controllers on VIA-based motherboards,” commented Greg Young, Senior Director and General Manager for Broadcom's High Speed Controller Line of Business. “Together with VIA’s leading chipset solutions we are offering an exceptional PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet solution for today’s demanding users.”

About the Broadcom BCM5751
The Broadcom® BCM5751 is designed for use with desktop and workstation PCs and has been optimized to provide the industry's best price and performance combination. The BCM5751 provides significant advances in client manageability by adding support for the Alerting Standards Forum (ASF) 2.0 specification. This provides IT professionals with automatic alerts when support issues occur and allows them to remotely address these concerns.

About the VIA K8T890 Chipset
Optimized for a complete range of AMD Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX, Opteron, and Sempron processors, VIA K8T890 Series chipsets feature the unique VIA Flex Express Architecture to allow the industry’s most flexible implementations of PCI Express devices. Multiple device configurations can be implemented, with support for up to five PCI Express devices directly into the chipset North Bridge and a total of 20 PCI Express lanes for a combined bandwidth of 10GB/s.

VIA K8T890 Series chipsets include support for the latest PCI Express x16 graphics cards, and up to four PCI Express x1 connections to high speed PCI Express peripherals, such as Gigabit Ethernet and bandwidth hungry HDTV tuner cards. Forthcoming solutions from the VIA K8T890 Series will include the VIA DualGFX Express feature, a solution that stands ready to support all dual graphics card industry standards. VIA DualGFX Express provides enhanced single application performance with supporting graphics cards and multi-monitor support for power multitasking without tying up vital system bandwidth.

VIA K8T890 Series chipsets also feature an asynchronous bus architecture, providing improved system optimization options to enable power users to squeeze the very most out of their systems.

When combined with the market-leading VIA VT8237 South Bridge and a broad array of VIA companion chips, VIA K8T890 Series chipsets provide the most comprehensive range of storage, multimedia and connectivity features available for the AMD64 processor platform today, including native Serial ATA and V-RAID, 6-channel or 8-channel VIA Vinyl audio, USB2.0, and 1394.
