A tour of Windows Vista Beta 2

This article will preview Vista and give you a broad look at what Vista has to offer. Keep in mind that this is a beta and some of the characteristics detailed later on in this article can and probably will change between now and the release of Vista. Also note that this is not a full review of the OS. While we believe an overview is warranted at this time, we're not going to delve deeply into every issue due to the fact that we're dealing with a beta

That leads to a situation where apps that don’t have volume control like Gaim chimes in when you’re jamming to your music at a high volume. Vista has solved this with a mixer that allows users to control the volume of any application using the audio hardware.
nifty!

and you can use a flashdisk to speed up file access

The differences with using ReadyBoost are pretty dramatic when timed. Without ReadyBoost, it took my system 49.93 seconds to launch Half-Life 2:Lost Coast (from the Steam app to the HalfLife2 Menu) and with ReadyBoost (after thrashing the system), just 34.9 seconds. Both launches were conducted with the system under heavy load.
