Default Qualcomm reveals AI ready chips

Gunning for Nvidia

Chipmaker Qualcomm revamped the midrange products in its system-on-chip portfolio with faster graphics, more power efficient cores, and Nvidia beating AI functions.

The Snapdragon 665, and the Snapdragon 700 series are two new SKUs in the long rumoured Snapdragon 730 and a gaming optimised variant dubbed Snapdragon 730G.

Qualcomm vice president of product management Kedar Kondap said that in the last several years, Qualcomm has been looking at different technologies – cameras, AI, Gaming and Power.

The 11-nanometer Snapdragon 665 has more in common with the Snapdragon 660 than the Snapdragon 670. It has Kryo 260 cores as opposed to newer Kryo 360 cores. We guess it will have eight, but Qualcomm didn’t say.

It also uses Spectra 160 ISP rather than the Snapdragon 670’s Spectra 250 for image processing. It drives up to three cameras at a maximum sensor resolution of 48 megapixels, Qualcomm says.

Qualcomm is claiming the Adreno 610 GPU has 20 percent power savings and supports Vulkan 1.1. The X12 LTE modem, which was the same as the Snapdragon 636 — supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi and cellular download and upload speeds of up to 600Mbps and 150Mbps (LTE Category 13), respectively, with 4X4 MIMO, three times carrier aggregation, and 256-QAM.
