Default NVIDIA Set to Fine-Tune Chipset Roadmap

NVIDIA Corp. said it would change its chipset roadmap as a result of acquisition of ULi Electronics, a designer of core-logic and multimedia products from Taiwan. The company, however, is unlikely to add low-cost core-logic solutions to its lineup for Intel processors, but boost up its chipsets developed for the high-end market.

“NVIDIA will adjust its chipset roadmap following the acquisition of ULi Electronics,” NVIDIA’s president and chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang is reported to have said.

DigiTimes web-site reports citing the head of the company that NVIDIA is looking to enhance its high-end chipset line for the Intel platform, but has no plans to participate in the entry-level segment in the short term.

NVIDIA announced this week that it would acquire assets of ULi Electronics, a chipset developer from Taiwan that has been struggling to survive in the past few years. But in addition to not very popular and technologically advanced chipsets, ULi has been developing a lot of chips for multimedia applications, including audio and video solutions that may interest NVIDIA and may even make the graphics giant to adjust its nForce roadmap.

Under the terms of the agreement, NVIDIA will pay approximately $52 million for ULi Electronics’ shares. The acquisition, which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of the company’s fiscal year 2007 (calendar year 2006), remains subject to the satisfaction of regulatory requirements and other customary closing conditions.

Alex Kuo, president and chief executive officer, ULi, will join NVIDIA as a senior executive responsible for MCP sales, marketing, and support functions in Asia. The acquisition is expected to strengthen the company’s sales, marketing, and customer engineering presence in Taiwan and China.
