When you know there's some big, faceless plot moving the world as you know it, but you don't know what that plot is, or why you're at the center of it, that can make for a darn fine gaming experience. The first Deus Ex had so many twists and turns in it that it would make your head spin. But apart from having one of the more involved and complex stories ever seen for an FPS, it also really upped the ante on stealth, non-combat based advancement through levels http://www.gameaxis.com/articles/vie...id=289&gid=653
