AMD Puts Pressure On Intel In PC Gaming With New Socket For Two Dual-Core Processors

Advanced Micro Devices is going to fire back at Intel today in the enthusiast PC market. The Sunnyvale company will unveil a new socket for high-end computers today that will allow it to put two dual-core microprocessors side by side in a PC. The new 4x4 socket will help it compete for the speed crown with Intel, which is poised to launch its new Conroe desktop microprocessors in July.

this will be interesting; Quad Core PC; without games or applications that take 100% advantage of even 2 CPU's... interesting strategy; what their whole reverse-HT all about then?

does it have any practical sense/benefit from majority of users? Or, simply to fire back at Intel, an "Ego trip".

I could imagine it for the PRO segment but currently I thought there already were 4 way systems.

new sockets = angry consumers

bad move either way; putting more CPUs in a PC doesn't make single threaded applications run faster, 99% of games are single threaded. end result: 1xFX-62 = 2xFX-62 << Conroe.

but that's not for tomorrow, and their "fix" is to try and hold the enthusiast market in their grip and hope it will best Conroe...

the only thing I could imagine is that they want to do something like SLI, which is a success from a business standpoint as you can now sell 2 500$ cards to the rich people, so why not sell 2 1000$ CPUs?

Prgrammers of mainstream applications haven't used dualcores yet so it's doubtfull it would pay off anytime soon
