Default AMD Athlon 64 FX Processor Honored as 2004 `Product of the Year' by PC World

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jun 8, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- AMD (AMD) announced today that the AMD Athlon(TM) 64 FX processor family was honored by PC World with the 2004 World Class Award for Product of the Year. The World Class Award winners were announced in the July 2004 issue of PC World (now available online and on newsstands June 15).

Custom made for performance-hungry users like gamers, prosumers and enthusiasts, AMD Athlon 64 FX processors continue to push the boundaries of cinematic computing with the world's highest-performance PC processor on the market today. Based on AMD64 technology, the AMD Athlon 64 FX processor is seamlessly transition into the 64-bit future.

Celebrating its 22nd year, PC World's respected World Class Awards honor the best in computers, hardware, software and the Internet. To select the best of the best, PC World's editors examined the entire spectrum of products that have appeared in or were submitted to the magazine over the past 12 months. Hundreds of products in 67 categories were judged on usability, design, innovation, features, performance and value.

"The ultimate buyers' guide, World Class Awards set the standard for excellence in the high-tech industry," said Harry McCracken, editor in chief of PC World. "From performance PCs to spam filters to GPS navigation devices and video instant messaging services, the editors reward the finest products and most outstanding performers in this annual award program. Congratulations to the AMD Athlon 64 FX processor series."

"AMD understands that extreme PC users crave performance; they demand graphic images that are nearly indistinguishable from reality. We know our gamers and PC enthusiasts love the unprecedented performance of the AMD Athlon 64 FX processor, but it's also rewarding when the industry recognizes our innovation," said Marty Seyer, vice president and general manager of AMD's Microprocessor Business Unit. "As AMD paves the way for 64-bit computing, validation from PC World as 'Product of the Year' further emphasizes the value AMD places on delivering technology in response to customer demand coupled with high-performance computing."

The AMD Athlon 64 FX processor family, like all AMD64 processors, has the added security benefit of Enhanced Virus Protection (EVP). This capability, enabled by the upcoming Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Service Pack 2, will be able to prevent the execution of certain types of malicious viruses. The award-winning AMD64 desktop processors also feature Cool'n'Quiet(TM) technology, an innovative system-level feature that lowers the power consumption of the PC when maximum performance is not needed. A PC with AMD's Cool'n'Quiet technology enabled will consume less power, and run cooler and quieter on most applications. AMD64 processors also feature the exclusive Direct Connect Architecture that directly connects the memory controller and I/O to the central processor unit, improving overall system performance and efficiency.
