Default ultra-dma questions

Hi everyone,

This may be a stupid question but besides some general knowledge I'm quite a noob in the hardware category.
There's something about u-dma I've noticed and it's not clear to me at all. Some motherboards list their support for dma as "ata 133/100/66 ide " or something like that.

The thing is they do not all explicitly say they support udma-33,
and every ide cd/dvd drive I found uses udma 33. So my question is - is udma or ata or whatever downwards compatible?

It almost has to be, can't see a motherboard survive without the old coaster support, but why not say it's supported then?

Anyways, I'm sure someone here knows something more on this,
any help appreciated.
