Default Problem booting from CD-ROM on old PC

Specs:
Pentium 133
16M RAM
2GB HD

Situation:
I want to install SlackWare 12.0 from CD-rom. The Cd is bootable, as proven by the other 5 freshly installed servers.
However, when the system (upon boottime) start searching for boot records on the CD, he fails and returns te following message:
Quote:
1. FD *** system-type (00)
*** = jibberish: 'ù[some DOS-smiley][some DOS-left arrow]'

(then, he continues to boot from HD).

The weird thing is: a long while ago I already installed a Slackware distribution on this computer (Slack 10.2 I think). Checked with that CD but recieved the same message. I figure it must be something in the BIOS.. I changed CD-drives (to be sure I also tried with an old 4x), but no result. To be sure I attached it to IDE2 as a master with a different cable, no result..

Dit a search on the message, could get much useful information..

Anybody got some ideas?

It actually boots from HD, so don't think that would help?

the problem could be related to the CD-R itself: I burned a cd with an OS install on a Plextor Premium at 52x... the verification went ok but got errors on the target PC (that had no Plextor writer, though relatively recent and fast CD drives). Reburned a CD-R at lower speed and everything was flawless...

The faster you burn, the more dicey compatibility can get...

Well, I used the disc in several other computers as well, without problems.
And I burned it at 8x I think. Use an old 16x Lite-on but to be save I use 8x

It also works in several drives ánd older CDs that also had worked without problems (win2k, older Slack versions,..) give the same error..

yes, I agree, I think that should be a test to be done: why not try mounting with you old PC the same drive, if you can, used to burn the CD-R, that way you could eliminate the variable "CD drive+CD-R disc" and see that in case of troubles, it's definitely the MB the culprit, if everything it's OK, then it's the old CD drive that should be pensioned...

Ow, but I also tested several drives & cables.
Didn't help though

BUT: I do start to think it might be the CD anyways.. Although I succesfully used it on 8 other systems, I now encountered a boot-problem with a 'more recent' P3 450. This is very awkward, as I had no problems installing it on a P1 233 MMX.. Tried burning a second CD, but same result.

Even after changing CD-drives, problems stay

After more research, it turned out that the problem is caused by the actual ISO image. Something with boot-sector size. Anyway, will boot from other CD with 'smart boot manager', then boot from Slack CD. Should do the trick (tomorrow )
