Default webbased gui for router: safe or not?

I bought me an edimax router but instead of a installation cd there's just an ftp link to do all the settings. So I have to give my password for my adsl connection away to that ftp. Is that safe or not, I mean: is the router connected to that link all the time or is it just used for setting up the router?

and now I'm thinking about it, can I get access from one pc to another thru that router thingie? I'm reading the manual but I don't know sh*t about these things. There's something about bridging, that's what i need right?

normally these broadband users only allow access to the configuration session (ftp link? I think u mean telnet) on the LAN port, so that by default you cannot access the config setup from the WAN connection (WAN connection is where your adsl modem is connected on)

in the setup of the router you have to give the information cause otherwise it won't be able to dail-in

the function should enable is NAT (network address translation)
check the manual

if all else fails, bring it over to RichyB tommorow (together with UTP cable & your adsl login info)

Owkay, it works. My pc's can access the net now but for one being able to find the other I had to run the xp network wizard. Will look into the nat thingie later, looks to complicated for now
