Default Network printer

Beware: dumb questions ahead

I connect a network printer with a USB or parallel cable and then i share it.

But is it possible to omit the parallel or USB cable and just plug in a cat5-cable in the 10/100Base-TX internal print server/network card and the switch ? I'm almost shure this is true, but the real question is:

If so, how do i control it's settings and how do i set the sharing properties ?

Thx 4 your reply !

what you are looking for is a Print server

a HP Jetdirect is pretty common , you connect a network cable & a printer to it. Then configure the box & away you go

configuration is done through a webbased frontend, pretty straightforward

It is a HP printer (jetdirect) i want to order.
Webbased: like accessing it with http://HP.PRINT.IP.ADRESS like accessing my switch/router atm.

Now: is the ip of the hp a standard value (like: it is always 192.168.100.100) ? Don't want any conflicts with my router/switch which has a set IP i cannot alter.

Don't want to start laying cables and drilling holes in new furniture before i'm 100% sure about this.

"normally" it is configured for DHCP out of the box
but in the worst case you have to connect a console cable to the printserver & configure it this way before inserting it into your network

it is best that you give the printserver a fixed IP address

it can be managable by http://ip_address if the printserver you select supports it

HP has a webjetadmin software package which will surerly get the job done.

Thank you !
"Pulling" 4m cat5 cable or 4m printcable trough furniture ... it's a very big difference.

Off-topic, but does that cost more than normal cable?
