nForce2 pushed to the Max: NF7 rev 1.2 vs Epox 8r(g/d)a+

Motherboards/AMD S462 by richbastard @ 2003-03-14

Stock speeds are no option when you buy an Abit NF7-S rev 1.2 or Epox 8r(g/d)a+. Which one can obtain the highest FSB? How do they compare at extreme high speeds? Which one of these three do you have to buy to be king of the hill?

Epox 8rga+: specs & bios

Epox 8rga+

bios:

Abit 8rga+ rev 0.6
max vcore2.2
max vdimm2.9v
max vagp1.8v
max vdd2.0v
FSB settings100-250mhz
AGP settings50,66-100mhz

If your planning to overclock to the max, be sure to obtain a motherboard with a rev A3 northbridge, they overclock better than the older A2. The sample tested has a rev A3 nb:
Madshrimps (c)

voltages:
In contrary to the 8rda+, the 8rga+ has a 12V connector which keeps your 5V & vcore stable. Just as the NF7-S, the 8rga+ manages the provide a very stable 5V line to the board with a cheap PSU.

Vcore is stable, and overvolts by ~0.03v.

cooling:
I feel highly uncomfortable pumping 1.8vdd or more through the nb cooled by a crappy heatsink and some gum between it. I highly recommend to change the heatsink with a better one, or at least be sure a fan is blowing on it.

The southbridge is cooled by a small and simple heatsink, which should be sufficient to keep it from crashing at 200+ FSB.
