Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 Overclocking with Air Cooling

Overclocking/Overclocking Tests by windwithme @ 2006-06-19

With the release of Core 2 from Intel approaching we take a look at how much headroom the X6800 (Extreme Edition) has left, clocked at 2.93Ghz we push it to the limit using high end air cooling.

Maximum overclock with air cooling

Although the highest rated Extreme edition that Intel will first introduce will be clocked at 2.93Ghz it seems even these have quite a bit of headroom in the megahertz department; With a high end third party heatsink it?s not very hard to overclock these chips to speeds which were only obtainable with subzero cooling not long ago.

This particular chip reached a healthy 3750Mhz (CPU-Z Validated) which is extremely impressive, if we can expect similar results from the lower end Core 2 CPUs than the future looks bright.

Running benchmarks at this speed becomes a quick affair as the Core 2 tends to tear through them at rapid pace, a SuperPi 32Mb calculation finishes in 15 minutes

The clock is ticking and many people are eager to upgrade their PCs, for the first time in several years Intel will once again find a place in enthusiasts' systems world wide, let?s hope they can make enough Core 2 in the coming months to avoid unnecessary price increases.
