Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 Overclocking with Air Cooling

Overclocking/Overclocking Tests by windwithme @ 2006-06-19

With the release of Core 2 from Intel approaching we take a look at how much headroom the X6800 (Extreme Edition) has left, clocked at 2.93Ghz we push it to the limit using high end air cooling.

Performance Preview - Core 2 vs AM2 X2

A short Performance preview

Using an AM2 Athlon X2 4800+ overclocked to 2800Mhz let?s see how much faster the Core 2 is? Here is our AM2 test setup which consisted of the same memory modules running at DDR2 560 CL4 4-4-12

PCMark05 is a system performance tool, we focus on the CPU and Memory results here:

Looking at the CPU score the improvement is 6% at default Core 2 E6800 speeds and close to 20% when the Core 2 is overclocked. The memory bandwidth sees a smaller increase, but that doesn?t seem to hinder the performance of the Core 2.

Next up a golden oldie, SuperPi 1Mb, a very CPU intensive benchmark where the larger cache of the Core 2 flexes its muscles.

Overclocked the Core 2 is almost twice as fast.

The Everest CPU Benchmark displays a noticeable improvement over the X2 even with the Core 2 at stock speeds. CPUMark99 has been used for quite some time now to measure pure performance, the Core 2 is ahead of AMD X2 here also
