AMD Athlon FX-57 Overclocking - Dry Ice vs Phase Change Cooling

Overclocking/Overclocking Tests by geoffrey @ 2006-06-13

So what do you do a warm pre-summer day in June? Get out the dry ice of course. I already had a modified phase change cooling but was interested to see what a few blocks of ice could accomplish.

The FX on Ice - take 2

Lifting the tube of the CPU contact seemed to be good, but could be better

So the next day I retried, this time I used Acetone inside the tube which seemed to improve base temp slightly, sitting at a cosy -78°C

The BIOS reports -38°C for the CPU (at idle)

Once in windows under full load temperatures crept up towards -20°C which was quite good actually and overclocking went easier and got better clocks: 3678Mhz

The CPU maximum overclock while still remaining “stable” enough to not crash the screen capture program was ~150Mhz shy of 4ghz:

With a bigger container (tube) we should be able to get better (lower) temperatures under load so a higher stable overclock can be achieved, the motherboard and memory is able to run at ~270Mhz HTT without issue.

To recap the advances:

I like to thank my sidekick Cranox for his help and assistance, until next time!
