HEC Power Supply - An inside look of a PSU manufacturer

Cases & PSU/Power Supplies by SidneyWong @ 2006-03-31

HEC/Compucase is a major OEM power supply and case manufacturer. Its business partners include Toshiba, Hitachi, LG Electronics and some of the well known brands in the PC enthusiasts market. In my last business trip to Southern China, HEC sent me an invitation to tour their plant located in Shenzhen, China.

Thoughts & Conclusion

Thoughts & conclusion:

My second trip to Southern China and Hong Kong in the last three months has given me more insight of the changing dynamic in Asia (Report of the first one here). It is not difficult to read factory building signs of popular brand names in the PC market along the railroad connecting Hong Kong to Mainland China. I'd say 99.9% of the time, they are owned by Taiwan investment firms.

HEC is a good example; moving in the western production and management techniques to a place with abundant supply of labor; low overhead cost; easy access to port facility. At the same time, Mainland China is providing the needed infrastructure to meet this growth.

I would love to go back to tour the ATX/Server case line. With over 400.000 cases produced monthly, I wonder how many of these familiar looking cases I saw might have HEC logo printed on the packages in the near future if and when HEC decides to market its own brand.

With nearly 30 years of working experience in manufacturing environment covering electronics, automotive and consumer market in the U.S., I'd say HEC has given me a darn good impression on first sight in their practice and procedure; shop floor control and maintenance.

I am confident after touring their factory and finished goods area; some of you are using HEC manufactured power supplies with different but well known name-tags.

I like to thank Mr. Bill Wang for his kindness and precise presentation; Mr. Frank Lin and Mr. Ben Lee for their assistance in the plant tour; our readers in letting me share my experience. I leave you with the photo of the conference room where I spent part of the rainy afternoon.
