AMD XP Aircooling - Heatsink Roundup Q4 2003

Cooling/CPU Cooling by jmke @ 2004-01-07

We go for silent! The average AMD setup still sounds like a jet taking off. Swiftech, Thermalright and other heatsink manufacturers are trying their best to provide us with a silent solution to cool these hot potatoes. Do they succeed? And which one does it best?

Thermalright SP-97

Thermalright SP-97 :

Thermalright has continually improved the efficiency of their heatsinks, and the SP-97 doesn't disappoint. Using the same layout as the P4 version (SP-94) it sports 3 heat pipes which advantage increases as the heat output of the CPU rises.

The heat pipes’ efficiency changes with the orientation of the heatsink, placing the motherboard it flat (desktop) on its belly ;) gives the best results, check the picture below for the full info:

The heatsink comes securely packaged and includes everything needed for installation; Thermalright has listened to their customers and included a printed manual! In the past one had to check their website for the installation instructions as no manual was provided with their heatsink.

Installation is the same as with their previous SLK947-U and SLK900, a back plate on the motherboard which is secured by 4 screws which fit through the 4 mounting holes around the socket. Just place the heatsink over the 4 mounting stubs and screw the 4 springs tight, this provides ample pressure on the CPU's DIE.
Thermalright has included 5 units of every installation equipment just in case you lose one, great thinking!

This heatsink is made from Solid Copper, the base is sufficiently machine lapped making further manual lapping almost redundant. You can see that the heatsink might prove to be a tight fit on most motherboards, to prevent any issue's they have tested it on an impressive list of motherboards found here, if yours is not on the list then send off an email to their support!
