AMD XP Aircooling - Heatsink Roundup Q4 2003

Cooling/CPU Cooling by jmke @ 2004-01-07

We go for silent! The average AMD setup still sounds like a jet taking off. Swiftech, Thermalright and other heatsink manufacturers are trying their best to provide us with a silent solution to cool these hot potatoes. Do they succeed? And which one does it best?

TerAngreal's test setup
CPU AMD Athlon XP1700+ @ 2000Mhz - 1.75v
Mainboard Abit NF7-S rev2.0
Cooling Thermalright SLK947-U
Swiftech MCX462-V
Scythe Kamakaze
Memory 2 * 512Mb PC3200 TwinMOS

Hard drives Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80GB P-ATA 2Mb
Western Digital WD1200JBN 120GB P-ATA 8Mb
Optical drives NEC ND-1300A DVD burner
Lite-On 12x/48x DVD reader

Used Fans:

  • NMB Silent 80mm
  • Papst 90mm
  • Kamakaze Fan 80mm (High/Low)
  • Flashy ACRyan 80mm CaseFan
  • Vantec Tornado 80mm (just for kicks)

    The outcome :

Low CFM fans give the best results for the MCX, while the Vantec Tornado proves to be the best when combined with the SLK! The Kamakaze is able to keep up with the competition when high output fans are used, but it loses ground when we choose low noise fans and even crashes our test-rig completely as seen in the 4th graph!
