Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q 2TB TB 3 / USB 3.2 External SSD Review

Storage/SSD by stefan @ 2022-05-11

By using Thunderbolt 3, the Rocket XTRM-Q 2TB does bypass drives using USB 3.2 Gen2x1 and even the newer USB 3.2 Gen2x2, by offering a theoretical bandwidth of 40Gbps. This aspect helps a lot for both reads and writes, succeeding to beat the other tested drives, even when using a different, lower-specced system. By using Micron’s 96L 3D QLC NAND flash, the drive can maintain a high sustained write rate until the SLC cache is being filled up and, in our tests, we noted that the drive won’t go under 170MB/s in this scenario.

Packaging, A Closer Look

It is time to check out another interesting product from Sabrent, and to be more exact the XTRM-Q 2TB, which was mainly manufactured as a Thunderbolt 3 external SSD but can also function in compatibility mode as an USB 3.2 drive, with a separate cable. The drive is very compact and uses the chassis as a heatsink, to protect the internal drive against overheating. The XTRM-Q SKU can be found with capacities ranging from 500GB and up to an impressive 16TB!

The packaging ROCKET XTRM-Q comes in is fully wrapped inside a transparent plastic layer, in order to avoid damages during transit:

The enclosure does sport a familiar design, as we have seen with other storage products from Sabrent; the middle segment is made from glossy paper and shows the main product, connected with a Thunderbolt 3 cable, but also the TB3 logo:

On the side, we will note the full name of the product:

The product serial number is also spotted on the opposite side:

On the back, we will note the main product features, along with the system requirements but also the package contents:

By removing the middle layer, we will note that the rest of the packaging is made of thin and light aluminum, which is painted grey, to share the color scheme of the ROCKET XTRM-Q:

Same info is available on the sticker, which acts as a hinge for the two aluminum halves:

After opening the box, we will end up with two separate compartments (the drive and its hardware accessories) but also some documentation:

Sabrent is offering some configuration details in order to obtain optimal performance while connected on Thunderbolt 3:
