Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q 2TB TB 3 / USB 3.2 External SSD Review

Storage/SSD by stefan @ 2022-05-11

By using Thunderbolt 3, the Rocket XTRM-Q 2TB does bypass drives using USB 3.2 Gen2x1 and even the newer USB 3.2 Gen2x2, by offering a theoretical bandwidth of 40Gbps. This aspect helps a lot for both reads and writes, succeeding to beat the other tested drives, even when using a different, lower-specced system. By using Micron’s 96L 3D QLC NAND flash, the drive can maintain a high sustained write rate until the SLC cache is being filled up and, in our tests, we noted that the drive won’t go under 170MB/s in this scenario.

The Thunderbolt 3 cable is, as expected USB-C to USB-C:

The enclosure is made from high quality sandblasted aluminum with beveled edges and sports both Thunderbolt and the Sabrent logos on top. It is very compact at just 105mm x 45mm, with a thickness of 14mm:

Near the Sabrent logo, we will note the TB3/USB 3.2 port:

On the sides, we will note the mirror-like finish:

The drive also comes with an activity LED, which lights up differently depending on the interface used:

The bottom area comes with two small rubber feet but also some drive identification numbers, along with the product code name:
