Crucial X8 1TB Portable SSD Review

Storage/SSD by stefan @ 2020-04-02

Judging by the length of the supplied USB Type-C cable, the X8 was mainly thought to be used with more portable devices such as laptops, tablets or even consoles. Thanks to the high read/write speeds, we can successfully use the drive for productivity tasks and not only for backups and data migration from one computer to the other, solving a lot of issues in case your device has not been equipped with a high-capacity SSD. During normal use, the aluminum unibody chassis of the product can become warm to the touch, meaning that it is also used as a heatsink for the internal drive.

A Closer Look Contd.

Crucial has included an USB-C to USB-C cable (USB 3.2 Gen2) but also an USB-C to USB-A adapter, for devices that do not sport the newer USB-C interface:

While the adapter is pre-installed to the cable, it is easy removable:

With the purchase of the drive, you also have access to the Acronis True Image for Crucial software, for drive cloning, backups and more, as mentioned in the leaflet. The drive is also compatible with Crucial Storage Executive, for additional optimization:

The X8 has a premium build quality, with a unibody core of anodized aluminum and rubberized plastic covers on the sides; the product logo is placed on a thin plastic frame:

The same frame design is present on the back side of the drive, where we will get to see the total drive capacity, but also logos of the supported standards:

On the right side of the drive we will be able to spot the USB Type-C port:

In order to get the drive operational, we’ll only get to install the supplied cable:
