Storage/SSD by stefan @ 2015-10-27

Silicon Power continues the line of affordable products with the Slim S80 7mm SSD, which is available online for just about 85 Euros when considering the 240GB version. This one is incorporating 16 NAND chips of Toshiba 19nm MLC flash along with a NANYA 512MB DDR3 buffer and the Phison PS3108-S8-I 8-channel controller.

A Closer Look Contd.

If we look more closely, we will be able to spot the SATA Data/Power connectors:

In order to access the internals, we had to remove four screws, two on each side; the drive sports the 7mm format so it is well compatible with ultrabooks:

On one of the PCB sides, we will be able to spot eight 19nm MLC NAND chips from Toshiba (out of the total of sixteen), each having a 16GB capacity for a total of 256GB. The 240GB is available after overprovisioning and some other controller overhead requirements:

The opposite side is carrying a similar arrangement, only now we will also get to see the SSD controller along with the RAM cache:

The RAM cache was manufactured by NANYA and its part number is NT5CC256M1GCP-D1; as per instructions from NANYA, the chip does contain 512MB of DDR3 1600MHz memory:

Slim S80 SSD is controlled by the Phison PS3108-S8-I controller, which is an 8-channel component; as some of its features we could enumerate its power saving capabilities, built-in static and dynamic wear-leveling or the built-in regulator:
