Streacom FC5 Alpha Fanless Chassis Review

Cases & PSU/Cases by petervandamned @ 2015-10-23

The FC5A case from Streacom has a super thin and slick design, offering a completely silent system for daily work but much better to get integrated in your home cinema systems. Has a highly professional look so it can be placed in any living room.

Building the HTPC

In this part we will take a look on how we build this system. What we need:

CPU: Intel Pentium G3258/4670K

CPU Cooler: Streacom 4-heatpipe fanless design

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97M-DS3H

RAM: Samsung M378B5273DH0-CH9 4 x 4 gig

Video: Onboard

Power Supply: Streacom ZeroFlex 240 PSU

HDD: Mushkin Chronos 90GB x 2 in raid 0

I have made the choice to include a high-performance CPU and quite a bit of RAM in order to see if the cooling system can handle this. That is why the 240W PSU is installed and not a Streacom Nano150 PSU as we tested in a previous review on the Streacom FC8 Evo.

Taking off the lid with 4 Philips screws:

Sliding the lid a bit backwards and it's open:

Pre-mounted USB3 connectors and Power On and HDD light cable:

Motherboard thanks to GigaByte:

The CPUs we will be using during this review:

Don't forget to install the I/O Shield!

Preparing the mount for the CPU cooling will be realized thanks to some 3M stickers which will be placed on the back of the motherboard:

Placingf in the motherboard with the screws:

Should not be that hard to do, however now we come to the part of the CPU cooling:

Hard to do? Not if you read the manual all is explained there and use the paste Streacom has included with the package or any you may have,as long as you use enough thermal compound:

:

Time to connect your PSU cables:

Oh snap! I have noticed the first minor issue with the small height of the case, can you see it ?

This motherboard has the USB3 connector straight up and the stiffness of the cable can cause some trouble when placing the cover back on. Streacom is aware of this problem but as long you do close the lid gentle no harm will be done to the MB.

Time for some testing now ->
