Cooler Master Storm Trooper Case Review

Cases & PSU/Cases by leeghoofd @ 2011-11-22

The Cooler Master gamers department aka Storm send us one of it's latest creations : The Trooper case. We were impressed with the Enforcer case, being manufactured in typical Cooler Master style. Excellent craftsmanship, no rough edges at all. Packed with innovative design features like the removable Hard Drive cage. Excellent cooling out of the box and loads of room to upgrade. An ideal gamers case, as even with all the features it retailed at a price that was still very affordable. The Trooper case continues on the same pace. This time being a full tower design, it might have some extra cards down it's sleeve. Could it make your PC stand out from the crowd at your favorite LAN party ? Let's open up the box and see what the engineers of the Storm team came up with...

Conclusion

Impressed now ? Really this is an astonishing case. Looking pretty ordinary at first glance, though when you cloesly approach this case you will start to stare. The attention to detail is so high. But this not only on the outside. The innards have been taken care off too. Allowing any size of motherboard to be perfectly mounted without much hassles. Multi GPU support is limited by your motherboard, not by this case, as the space is more than adequate to fit even the longest cards (up to 322mm).

Cooling has always been a priority with the Storm series. We would have liked to see a top fan on the Enforcer to top that case off. The Trooper has got you covered for excellent cooling, no heat will be allowed to get trapped in this case. If you desire to install more fans, two more 120mm side panel and a extra two more 120mm bottom fans can be installed. And allof them can be hooked up to the top fan controller and speed adjusted in 6 steps. For near silent operation to still enjoyable maximum air flow capacity. For the watercooling purists installing a full loop with a few radiators is within grasp.

Cable management is easy peasy lately. More than enough cutouts to route S-ATA and power cables. The space on the back is also more than plenty. Only lacking is one extra small cutout in the tray to neatly route the power, reset, LED cables to the motherboard. This would have topped it all off. But nothing a handy modder can't take care off.

The black theme with the red LED fans is a winning combo, defining true style. Luckily for them, that don't like the shiny stuff can switch off the LEDs. The X dock function is a nice addition, but I would have been more preferable if it was also functional with 3.5" HDD's iso just 2.5" ones.

The way the rotatable HDD Bays have been executed is quite original. Even if it takes some unscrewing action, the installation is pure logic. You don't even need to read the manual to figure it out. As expected for a full tower case the storage capacity is huge. Similar to the other full towers tested, you can house up to 8 HDDS in the two 4 in 3 HDD bays. In total up to 14 can be stored if we fill up all the slots. The little tool box on the bottom is a cool feature, to safely store your posessions.

Besides the comment of the little hole in the mobo tray and the lacking 3.5" HDD X-dock support, there's hardly any point to improve for me. Everything is in the package : maximum compatibility with mobo's and GPUs. Maximum cooling and storage capacity. And it can all be yours for a mere 130 euros, not a steep price for such a nicely crafted case. I'm looking forward to see if the CM Storm team can improve the Trooper. It will be pretty hard to accomplish, but I have faith in these guys.

The two Storm case products I have tested show two similarities : absolute quality and very good value for your money.

PROS :

CONS :

  • X dock station only for 2.5" drives
  • Mobo cutouts need a small displacement to the right.
