MSI's R6870 Hawk Review

Videocards/VGA Reviews by petervandamned @ 2011-10-17

In this review we take a closer look at this AMD based HD6870 video card. Sporting a non reference design PCB and a specially built Twin Frozr III Cooler. For extra and stable power the 8+2 Phase VRM design make this Hawk card stands out from the 6870 cards. MSI provides this card with a dual speed fan switch. Retaling at a price around € 180, it's not even that more expensive regarding reference HD6870's. Interestingly enough the MSI 6870 Hawk can be found cheaper then some competitors versions.

Did it blows holes ?

Time for some results at standard speeds of 930Mhz GPU and 4200Mhz of ram:

These results will be compared with a similar set up from my dear co-author Leeghoofd :)

First off all the F1 2011 game on Ultra settings. The circuit of Monaco is used with a total of 24 cars. I did run like 25 benchmarks to see if not the same error was made in the 2010 version. Luckly Codemasters did listen to there end users/reviewers, and delivered a stable benchmark.

You can adjust the benchmark setting in Program Files\Codemasters\F1 2011\example_benchmark.xml .Enable by adding -benchmark to the command line parameters Specify track and cars as shown below (up to 24 cars, 1 track), the camera always follows the first car in the list.

For a list of track and car names, browse to the Formula One installation directory and look at the folder names within the 'tracks\circuits' and 'cars' folders Options: outputfilename: Prefix for the benchmark results file, saved in My Documents\My Games\FormulaOne\benchmarks hardwaresettings: Use this file for the hardware settings during the benchmark

The car view to use can be set using the viewname attribute, options are... bumper head-cam bonnet chase_close chase_far; Weather conditions can be set using the weather attribute for the track, options are... 0 = Clear 1 = LightCloud 2 = Overcast 3 = LightRain 4 = HeavyRain 5 = Dynamic Note that there may be some variation in results when using more than 1 car, alternatively, you can stop cars overtaking by setting the yellowflag attribute for the track to 1 resulting in less variation in results. Cars appear on the starting grid in the same order as they appear in the car list. Starting grid position for the first car in the list can be specified using the gridposition attribute with number from 0-24.

Next in line was the Far Cry2 benchmark:

Crysis 2 Hardcore :

Mafia 2 :

And ending the standard out of the box tests with some 3dmark 06 and Vantage action:

All these results are run without any system tweaks. Just a straight forward and fresh installed ATI driver. The ATI 5870 is still a big surprise and performs admirably well in our little game test suite. But most important question of the day : how can the R6870 be overclocked ?

Let find some borders here and spread the fire even more ->
