MSI's R6870 Hawk Review

Videocards/VGA Reviews by petervandamned @ 2011-10-17

In this review we take a closer look at this AMD based HD6870 video card. Sporting a non reference design PCB and a specially built Twin Frozr III Cooler. For extra and stable power the 8+2 Phase VRM design make this Hawk card stands out from the 6870 cards. MSI provides this card with a dual speed fan switch. Retaling at a price around € 180, it's not even that more expensive regarding reference HD6870's. Interestingly enough the MSI 6870 Hawk can be found cheaper then some competitors versions.

Overclocking the Hawk

Time for some fun now !

Remember the switch on the PCB?

Without those set to the ON position I was able to go from 930Mhz GPU and 1050Mhz to a nice 1015Mhz and wicked 1255Mhz ram speed by just adjusting the clocks in MSIs Afterburner software .

However with this switch turned on :

Doesn't really seems to make a big increasen but this is due to the limitation of the air cooler. For insane speeds we normally use Phase cahnge, Dry ice or Liquid nitrogen and adjust voltages via either voltmodding or special extreme versions of the Afterburner soft. Keep checking the website for future updates. But for gamers the below results might be more interesting...

Wanna see some air results?

F1 2011 :

Faster frames per seconde could result in faster lap times :p

Far Cry 2 :

Crysis 2 :

Mafia 2 :

3Dmark 06 :

And 3Dmark Vantage :

In all benchmarks better results, logical of course as higher speeds reflect in a higher score.

Remember we didn't raise any voltages! It's only by modifying the GPU and memory speed and flipping the OCP switch.
