Shopping List

Here is a list of what you need:

  • Copper tube (I used 2" 1/8 diamter tube and 40cm long)

  • A copper base plate, there are different opinions on thickness of this plate, 1cm seems to provide the best results for Dry Ice and LN² cooling.

    Madshrimps (c)

  • A brazing torch that goes above 1500°C

    1) Silver:
Really expensive!, but very efficent. I like it, it distributes itself excelent, and you have short brazing times.

    2) Silfoss 94:
Most economical brazing rod, very cheap and efficent. It’s a mix of copper and phosphorus. You don’t need a fluxing agent. I have 10kg of it

    3) Brass/MS60:
The standard rod, nothing special. Silfos94 costs the same and is more efficent.

    Info from XS.org

  • Welding glasses to protect you eyes when brazing

    Madshrimps (c)

  • Drill + drill bits of 5mm and 7mm

    Madshrimps (c)

  • A vice or something where you can put the container on ( remember the temperatures are very high)

    Madshrimps (c)

  • A saw for.. sawing the copper tube and base.

    Madshrimps (c)

  • Some screws of M2 and M3
  • File to remove the sharp edges and provide the finishing touch

  • Some Wet/dry sandpaper (above grid 1000 is only for the looks)

    Madshrimps (c)

If you collected all this you’re almost ready to start, first we need to make a base plate which will transfer the heat away from the CPU ->

their truck rides out to pick it up on friday, they store it over weekend and make the necessary deliveries first thing monday morning. So, friday and monday is your best bet but since most people will be doing this in the weekend, it's best to call them and have them keep some aside for you to pick up on friday.
I have the phone number here somewhere, if I find it, I'll post it.

normally I don't read a whole review/howto but for jort's article, I've made an exception

the material that i am now using is ertalite or hd-1000 named.

this is something nobody know's, when tim was on the way to here i tested the plexi with ln² and a hammer. it was not breaking.

i think because the plexi was in direct contact with the container and the pressure due the screws it cracks.

so if you use plexi for holddown you should see the plexi doesn't make contact with the baseplate or tube and it w'll be oke

Why didn't you just solder the copper?
    Comment from jort @ 2005/05/09
due the extreme temps the solder can crack.
some people do solder it because they don't have the equipment to do, but i DONT recommend soldering
