Taxpayers to subsidise US suppliers

The cost of the US's bizzare persecution of Chinese company Huawei is going to cost tax payers a billion dollars.

For those who came in late, the US started claiming that Huawei was using its gear to spy on the US. It never provided any evidence and just threatened countries if they started using Huawei gear.

While this might have given the US a good pawn in the Trade War it put it on the back foot when it came to making 5G networks. Now it seems that the US government has decided that if the country is going to stay ahead in the 5G race the taxpayers are going to have to stump up a cool billion.

The money will give telcos $1 billion for small and rural wireless providers to replace network equipment from companies including Huawei and ZTE.

The legislation is similar to a bill approved in July by the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee that would authorise about $700 million in grants to remove Huawei equipment, in a bid to boost the security of the U.S. telecommunication network’s supply chain.
