Fighting over new ground

Buried in yesterday’s filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission was an indication that Nvidia still saw Huawei as a significant threat.

In a surprise comment, Nvidia said Huawei is a top competitor in various categories, including AI chips.

The filing highlights Huawei’s involvement in supplying AI chips such as graphics processing units, central processing units, and networking chips.

The Chinese tech giant has been identified as a cloud service provider, developing its hardware and software to enhance AI computing. This acknowledgement comes amidst the ongoing chip constraints, which have led Huawei to shift its focus towards AI.

Nvidia also named other competitors on its list of enemies, including Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom, and Qualcomm. However, these were less surprising.

Huawei’s AI ability is supposed to have been gutted by US sanctions across the Trump and Biden administrations. Despite challenges from US sanctions and chip constraints, Huawei has maintained its position as a market leader in Chinese smartphone sales and the Chinese hardware market.
