Default Nvidia experiments with five year gagging orders

Downgrading the press

The German website Heise has noticed that Nvidia's new non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) now last for five years and are more far reaching than product-specific information.

While most hacks will cheerfully sign an NDA if it will gain them access to new information and prepare their stories months in advance, normally non-disclosure agreements usually are product-specific and date-specific.

But the new NDA now applies to all information provided by Nvidia, so it did not refer to a specific product or information. There is no concrete expiration date. Nvidia has also put in lots of conditions that ran counter to basic journalistic principles.

Journalists are allowed to write only what fits Nvidia and is only allowed to be a marketing tool. This means that hacks who sign the NDA must be immediately discounted as reliable and not just for that story – any story which they mentioned Nvidia.

Mind you, this isn't the first time Nvidia has played around with this idea. In the days of The Inquirer, it also tried it on.

Our question then is... what has Nvidia got to hide?
