Default Microsoft dodges upgrade question

Software giant Microsoft is keeping tight lipped about the prospect of upgrading current first, and second generation Windows Phone handsets to Windows Phone 8 next year.

Vole needs to make sure that people buy the current generation of phone to help out its chum Nokia. But one of the reasons for not buying one is that it could be out-of-date when Windows 8 comes out.

Developer evangelist Nuno Silva told Portuguese technology site Zwame that Microsoft would provide users with an upgrade. But the hour long interview video appears to have been pulled, and Vole has refused to confirm what he said.

Instead Microsoft has said that all apps in our Marketplace today will run on the next version of Windows Phone. However it refuses to confirm that the existing phones will be upgraded.

According to Ars Technica, Microsoft has not said Silva was mistaken or misunderstood, just that no member of its staff has said anything at all about update availability.

It would seem, based on what Microsoft is saying, that the current batch of phones will run Windows 8. But it is not confirming that it will give users a free install.
