a64 troubles

msi k8n nforce3 socket754
a64 3200+
2 * 512Mb infineon ddr pc3200
geforce2 ultra
400watt noname psu

tried a diffirent graka, tried a pci graka
tried diffirent screens
switched some ram around
removed everything except for graka/ram/cpu
reseted cmos several times

no boot, no post, no nothing
everything fires up, but no screen

any suggestions?

kristos 10th September 2004 17:17

Had the same thing as you with my P4 and tried the same things as you... my proc was dead... still waiting for rma :grum:

jakkerd 11th September 2004 11:45

that sucks :s
lucky it's not my cpu :p

Sidney 11th September 2004 17:21

Let us know how it turns out.;)

jakkerd 11th September 2004 18:19

shop's not open till tuesday
i'll keep u posted

RichBa5tard 11th September 2004 19:03

The ondie A64 memory controller is pretty picky about which ram you use. Try another stick of ram before returning the processor, because incompatible ram would case the same kind of problems.

kristos 11th September 2004 22:46

Depends actually, the CG steppings have far better memory compatibillity then the C0's.
All newcastles and late clawhammers have CG steppings

RichBa5tard 11th September 2004 22:57

True, true, but the fact it's still more picky than the average Nforce2 board or i865/875 controller remains.

JNav89GT 12th September 2004 05:52

I'd guess ram too
try clearing cmos
and then give it another go

jakkerd 21st September 2004 16:37

my friend apparently broke a pin of the cpu, en thus no warranty
he then simply bought a new one :p

still no post though, but the mobo is geving me a long beep.
no error codes in the manual however.
i'll check the msi forums later on.

RichBa5tard 21st September 2004 16:47

With some luck and a lot of skills you could resolder the pin. If you're not planning to give it a shot, sell it to me. :P

I hope the broken processor didn't kill your motherboard too. :/

jakkerd 21st September 2004 17:28

if u wants it, i'll be happy to sell it too u :)

RichBa5tard 21st September 2004 17:35

PM me with your price. :)

jmke 21st September 2004 17:39

take pics when you do the solderjob, would be more then interesting :o

RichBa5tard 21st September 2004 19:42

Will do :)

jort 21st September 2004 21:41

isn't the long beep when you forgot to plug-in you videocard molex :p

i had it once

jakkerd 21st September 2004 21:49

geforce 2 ultra
the age of 'low' power consumption

jort 21st September 2004 22:57

lol you have a point :D

jakkerd 23rd September 2004 18:13

i have another system here now
1 stick of ram in bank 1 OR 2 works fine (tested both sticks in both banks)
but if i put 1 stick in each bank: crash
ram = 2*mtec 512Mb pc3200
bad brand of ram?
'cause 1 stick of 512Mb isn't enough for me

piotke 23rd September 2004 18:15

I used the setup with 2*256 Mb pC3500 corsair BH5, worked fine with both sticks...

From what I've read on the fora, that's again a problem of earlier (C0) memory controllers on the A64's...

jakkerd 23rd September 2004 20:56

i've been doing some more testing,
if i put the stick in bank2, windows crashes after 15-30 minutes.
bank 1 however is prime-stable.
can this still be a picky mem-controller?

kristos 23rd September 2004 21:02

well if it is, it would seem that it's more then just a picky memcontroller...

perhaps mail the motherboard manufacturer support about this? Wether you're wrong or right, they should be able to sort that out for you... I think...

Good news, I received the broken cpu today and was able to get it running. :)

I didn't manage to fix the broken pin on the processor itself, but it with some minor modifications to my motherboard, it works anyway.

I've cut a small piece of a fine iron needle, about as long as the other pins on an A64, and jammed it into the hole in the s754 socket where the missing socket pin would be. After putting some silver paint on the end of the broken needle, it conducts like a charm. Sorry for the lack of picks, my digicam battery went dead shortly after talking the first few pictures. : /

It's running prime stable at default speeds, i think it will be ok as long as I keep the processor in this motherboard. :super:

kristos 24th September 2004 23:09

way to go :super:

jmke 25th September 2004 12:12

OMFG :ww:

no pics though :(

Sidney 25th September 2004 16:15

Inserting a pin to the socket replicating the broken pin on the CPU is the way to go.:)

jmke 25th September 2004 16:19

nice resurrection action, hope you can remove the pin afterwards though, otherwise you're stuck with that CPU ;)

RichBa5tard 25th September 2004 16:25

I think it's pretty much jammed in the socket. I don't really care though, if I'd upgrade i'd be a s939 with PCI-X anyway.

jmke 25th September 2004 16:44

how does that A64 3200+ overclock? How much did you pay for it? (if you are allowed to say;))

RichBa5tard 25th September 2004 17:24

Well, it works fine at 220*11, but anything above that and I get HD corruption. I've read on a linux forum (purely by accident) that SATA1 & 2 are NOT pcilocked, but SATA3 & 4 are! I'm going to change my drives to channel 3&4 tonight, and see how far that will raise my overclock. Long time since I overclocked. :)

jmke 25th September 2004 17:32

look what I have sitting in my mailbox:) from Jnav's upcoming MSI K8n Neo2 S939 review; guess the same applies to the S754 version we have

I have my drives hooked up SATA 3&4 and run 230*10 with my A64 3000+ without prob, so I guess you should stay away from SATA1&2 when overclocking! Had my drives hooked up there "by accident" for cable routing advantages ;)

kristos 25th September 2004 17:57

nice find, is this MSI only or are there other boards/brands/chipsets that pose the same problem?

Sidney 25th September 2004 18:56

Foot note this:)

RichBa5tard 25th September 2004 19:57

It was defenitly SATA1 & 2 which was holding me back. Before, I would have HD corruption at 220mhz HTT, now 245mhz is no problem.

The revived A64 3200+ seems to be doing 2420mhz stable with stock cooling and 1.6vcore.

Sidney 25th September 2004 20:30

What kind of temp readings are you getting?

RichBa5tard 25th September 2004 20:38

Extreme low idle temperature, even lower than my A64 3000+. With C&Q enabled (1,05V, 1000mhz), it's exaclty 1 degree C over room temperature (21C). Stressed it's about 50 degrees with the standard cooler set to silent.

JNav89GT 26th September 2004 01:21

:)

Sidney 26th September 2004 01:38

It's called the no fuss overclocking; the best of it all.:)

jakkerd 27th September 2004 19:47

just tested with infineon, doesn't even post with ram in bank2
mailed soltek too, but no reply yet.
