maxtor hardrive windowing

i wanne make a plexi window in my Maxtor 80Gb 7200rpm Diamondmax plus 9

i made 2 window mods to some older hdd's but none of them realy worked
1st was f***** up because some dust felled on the platter
2nd was just an old one and the jumpers where off en i didn't find a way to start it

so i am ready for my 80 gb one

i have a question about something, i read something about some points you can solder the leds on the hdd.
or maybe the active led output to the leds i am going to putt in the hdd (4 bleu 3mm ultra bright leds)

so if someone knows where i can solder the wires to, be glad to tell me if you want

tnx

i'll keep you posted

ssl6 10th September 2004 16:22

maybe you can put leds throught the jumper.....i would monitor the voltage afterwards if you try that

TeuS 10th September 2004 16:25

be very careful when doing it. get a compressor and blow the HDD and your tools clean. use a room with as little dust as possible.

you've already managed to get it done correctly once?

jort 10th September 2004 16:33

yes maybe i just solder it on a +5 v point,

i'll do the removel of the front in a plastic bag

yes i think the 2nd was well done but the hdd was so old i couldn't see it on boot(something with the jumpersettings, so its a closet stand for now

kristos 10th September 2004 17:21

I've read a guide about this once:

They opened the hdd in the bathroom after having the hot water run for a while :)

The water vapor sticks to the dust in the air and falls to the floor.

then they quickly opened the hdd and placed it in a plastic sealable bag.

jort 11th September 2004 12:10

i just openend the hdd to have a look @ the inside.
it looks not easy to connect the wires to the leds.
but i am going to cut the middle of the hdd cover later this day.
pics w'll follow

Laagvliegerke 11th September 2004 14:48

You're crazy :D

jort 11th September 2004 14:58

the project is on hold for 2 weeks because i dont have good unscratched plexi here and i must look good offcourse
and because i dont wanne open the hdd 3 times( every time i open it the less chances it survives)
this is my victim

jort 11th September 2004 16:14

think i'll do something else this weekend

but i sure i going to make that window

jort 1st December 2004 21:19

oke now i've got the time and the tools to make the window(brand new dremel)
i am going to cut that cover to smithereens.

about the ledstuff, just going to make a tiny hole in the cover and let the wires come true there.

its going to be 4 ultra bright blue leds i think.
white is a nice colour too but,i'll see
mhh glue them with hot glue :D

i'll make enough pics for a how-to :super:

;)

jmke 1st December 2004 21:26

:super:

jort 1st December 2004 22:11

was just thinking where i could put the hdd :rod:

so we have the following things.
=> hdd+window+leds=>cool :ws:
=>anything thats not modded yet:rolleyes:
frontpanel:super: :super: :super:

you can amost guess it maybe but i am still horny from the tough.

thats how it looks naked, without the premodded El lighted "thermaltake logo"

the backside form the frontpanel(little bit better finisched but

this whas my idea for the "stock" front

imaginate yourself=> front with led lighted spinning hdd.

cheers
:king: :king: :king:

jmke 1st December 2004 23:08

that would very flashy!

Sidney 2nd December 2004 00:27

That's original thinking!! ;)

jort 2nd December 2004 18:43

k here we go

did some cutting into my frontpanel and this is the result.

the stock front :super:

the modded front :ws:

now the metal that will cover the edges of the hdd will be cut.

jort 2nd December 2004 21:37

and here we are again.

what did i do.
w'll see that in about now.

i cutted some "thin"(4mm) plate trough and made it in hdd shape. you like it :super:

another angle

the corners must be filed more round in a few days but its almost done.

to look it more agressive and sportive, i made a wider intake. its going to finisched better but its modding stop today.

going to make something like a blowpase(gang)

thats all for today :super:

keep it cool

btw:
have to cut 2 mor layers when my front is completely finisched.

jmke 3rd December 2004 07:51

looks very neat, be carefull about removing the top cover of the HDD, chance or ruining it, is very real!

Desert Eagle 3rd December 2004 11:08

:super: very nice!

jort 3rd December 2004 11:31

Just looked near me and i saw that plexi hdd laying around,
thought mhh lets try to fit it.
Offcourse i wouldn't fit perfect but thats not whats all about.
About the lighting of the hdd with blue leds, i had this blue ledbeamer shining on my atilogo.
So i removed it and placed it above the hdd.

This is the result:ws:

i' am prolly going to add more leds but this is already

:super:

jmke 3rd December 2004 11:50

 indeed, great work:)

Magnum_ 3rd December 2004 11:51

thats a deal :badair:

sunday evening.:super:
because agenda is full:^D (modding to do)

jort 4th December 2004 20:29

did some modding today, call it extreme
so in case you wouldn't know, its my maxtor 80GB ata 133 thats getting done.
here is a little walktrough :super:
this pic is a little blurry but you can see whats all about

the backside for a moment

hddcover applied in bench

off we go, started with dremeling that cover to pieces

other view

wow that went fast, just used 3 wheels and a spare one

so cover is done, i call it a succes

just have to saw that plexi and some perfection needed.(handy tool delivered with my dremel, sort of spinning blade, i'll take a pic later)

plexicover sawed and finisched

so just looking that its ready or not

now just glue it, i used some epoxyglue for that

to mix the epoxy good you can use a spare peace of plexi or something

epoxy is mixed and ready to apply

epoxy applied on hddcover(whats left of it):p btw: it sticks like hell

cover is glued on it, you have to be 100% sure when you apply it.

forgot to say, its still drying so i'll post some pics about 1-2h

thats it 4 today, just doing some voltmodding later this day

cheers :super:

jort 4th December 2004 21:23

jort 4th December 2004 22:00

you guys are making me doubt.

in this state its cool, but like kristos saids it a little bit small.
i'll think about it, either way its going to look cool however its done. :D

I like it this way.
because:
- front looks still the same as normal state, except for the hdd window. But If you start cutting in that front It won't look that profesionel anymore. (smooth edges etc)
-the small window shows enough, your platters and the moving thing.
-the effect of the light is better with the small window (I think)

EDIT: btw, that leds on the hdd, make it your hdd-led :D
