I'm having Acard issues with the P4C800 E DLX, apparently Vista doesn't like the Promise controller at and performance is far below XP ( EG XP STARTup 82Mb vs 32Mb)

jmke 16th May 2009 08:38

are you using onboard raid controller?
I have a spare Promise PCI controller lying around here

leeghoofd 16th May 2009 08:47

Is that directed at me or to Thorsten Jmke

In my case the Intel S-ATA doesn't allow RAID to be configured, so I loose performance there. The promise RAID controller has "known" issues with Vista (better for PCmark 2005) so performance is piss poor ( can I say PISS here ?)

I'll keep in touch for thursday

jmke 16th May 2009 08:53

yes you can piss away your education here. My reply was directed to you; but I think you're screwed with such an old board. Why try ACARD though? PCMark is ranked by CPU used; no need for an AGP board there;)

leeghoofd 16th May 2009 09:00

I have 3-4 more 478 CPU's incoming ( repairs and 2 won on Ebay ) with the Acard I get massive HD troughput (if it works properly) and can grab some easy points for the team. Look at eg the Pentium 4 2.0 results. The guy tops the Oc'ed 3.6ghz at stock speed with the help of Irams and co... ram disks are essential for Pcmark John.

For the rest wil try to push the CPU's on air and then under phase after some testing ( max FSB and co ). Till now the results are average (no golden egg in there :p)

jmke 16th May 2009 09:08

OCZ Vertex will do the same , much easier to install/config :D

leeghoofd 16th May 2009 09:11

Tested that, performance is slower John then the Acard...

OS is on the Vertex ( hooked up to the Intel S-ATA ) and the Acard to the Promise. Tried switching and the Vertex performance is also slower on the Promise (bummer).

If you can miss that controller I would love to give it a spin as I need massive improvement ( need to get 5900 points , I'm at 4900 flat )

Too bad you don't have the 60Gb version too, maybe in RAID they can do it

yes duh:) Vertex is maybe slower than ACARD, but mighty fast compared to HDDs:)
with Vertex on the onboard Intel controller, what XP startup did you get?

leeghoofd 16th May 2009 09:20

I don't recall as the total score was 300 points less than with the acard, so I didn't look into it.

Is that Promise PCI controller S-ATA or IDE ?

Will test more on thursday, gonna hunt for a school for the little critter in a moment. Tonite and tomorrow it's party time !

jmke 16th May 2009 09:21

maybe less than ACARD, but more than HDD ;)

leeghoofd 16th May 2009 09:24

Sadly not enough :p Maybe it's just the old man at the keyboard and not the hardware...

Chiller 16th May 2009 18:36

Leefhoofd : good benching for you.
the points are coming....

leeghoofd 16th May 2009 20:05

I hope so mate , but the CPU's aren't fab ( or the mobo is punished due to the 1Gb dimms ) as the FSB is pretty low with each one... Will see with the 512 Mb dimms

leeghoofd 17th May 2009 20:37

Croiman what went wrong with that 2001 score of you with 295 in SLI, scoring just 53K ? Does it scale so bad with SLI (in fact reducing performance)

Massman 17th May 2009 20:43

Vista

leeghoofd 17th May 2009 20:46

so bad drivers then ?

Massman 17th May 2009 20:50

No ... Vista just sucks for 3DM01 and AM3 :-)

Vista, and nvidia vga's don't score like that in mark01 like the ati 48** vga's.
But receive good hardware points for it, 6th place hardware for 295 sli.

Just done 3dmark06 again and gain 3K more.
Now it is 3dmark05's turn

leeghoofd 26th May 2009 22:10

Anyone got a S478 mobo here ( or knows one for sale) But not an Asus P4C800 nor P4P800. I will test the latter this week, but the P4C800-E has got serious issues with S-ATA tranfer ( 35Mb with the Acard, 32mb with the Vertex lol, 30mb with the promise controller) Tried a zillion of biosses, Vista, XP, Windows 7... transfer rate is shite.

No way I can get a decent Pc mark score at them rates... even on my parents old Mobo I can get higher rates than that ( 72Mb)...

leeghoofd 27th May 2009 07:15

Was already hunting down the Abits, but don't find many (one on Kapaza, seller doesn't respond )

i have a S478 mobo from gigabyte here, would you like to use it for your cpu ?

I need a S478 mobo with better transfer rates than the current 2 Asus ones (P4P800 and P4C800-E ) I own ... Even my parents P4G8X is faster with S-ATA (though max FSB is 166)...

I didn't do my homework otherwise I would have known these mobo suck for Pcmark05 due to the poor S-ATA implementation. Not even a PCI RAID Controller brings speed....

If you can miss ya Giga it would be nice to do the PCmark runs ( al the other tests have been done (pifast, wprime,...) , I need a voltmod on the P4C800 to get the volts stable 1.95 in the bios results in 1.82 under load  So I still have some headroom to get some extra points there...

Sadly I have not much on offer to give to you man...

Chiller 27th May 2009 18:38

you can use it, and bring it back, then you can try it for pcmark runs.
even you can use a Gigabyte I-ram for your pcmark vantage?

just get it back to me in working state

jmke 27th May 2009 19:23

he's got some ACARD action for his PCMark05 runs but the mobo is capping the speed at 33mb/s:)

leeghoofd 27th May 2009 19:29

Gamer 27th May 2009 19:30

I got a dead P4P800 (maybe you can use some parts) , a working P4P800 and the P4C800-E. Dunno which one to keep :o

Till now I top at 267FSB, more stable vcore will get me a bit more speed for sure... Maybe something for Geoffrey to do ?

@Croiman

Vanaf hoelaat ben je thuis Johan ? Ik moet morgen naar een briefing in Luik ivm Crazy Trip van volgende week, namiddag zal ik wel thuis zijn.

Chiller 27th May 2009 20:15

Oefening Crazy trip ???

k heb volgende week Quick Response.

k ben van 16.30Hr altijd thuis.
Trouwens we zijn nu aant msn-nen he??? lol

Was your board modded G ? Mine is 100% Stock and the CPU's are under water... I got some good rams on the way to get me over 215Mhz ram speed... hope to improve some PI runs there.

I had some divider issues with 1023 ( sometimes it defaulted back to 1:1 at bootup, sometimes it was 5:4,... nothing changed in the bios. So i reverted back to 1011

My main issue here is the Vcore : 1.95 set gives about 1.82 under load ( CPU-Z readout )

Don't think I went nuts on voltage either because of early P4 Vcore bug. It's modified but not a biggy, vcore and droop I guess.

leeghoofd 29th May 2009 22:44

I won an IC7 MAX3 at tweakers, hope that board will give me what I really need... but I need to get it first ofcourse and in proper working condition

leeghoofd 22nd September 2009 11:19

I've spend the wole weekend digging and comparing tests (different osses, setups, rams etc)

For cpu-z,pi and pifast : I'll use my BenchXP +SP2 with the Voodoo3 pci card

For PCMARK05 : It'll be regular tweaked XP Pro + SP3 and the Radeon 3850AGP. Vista has driver issues with the onboard Intel raid controller and even more issues with the Promise controller. I can get max 80-90Mb/s HD throughput on Vista (CPU OC'ed), while the XP does 130-140MB/s with the ACARD (with the CPU at stock clocks !) The HD transfer rate makes up big time for the 2/3D tests (where the gain is with Vista)

Wprime benchmark will be done on Vista 32bit... (no tips found yet to imrpove that benchmark) All help is welcome !

Now I need to find some time to bench and rebench them 15 CPU's !
