The custom watercooling thread

well folks, this summer I'm going to switch to watercooling. I've put my box of heatsinks aside and got me some copper:D

I'm going to watercool because aircooling my future system in that midi case of me (Koolance PC2-C without the WC unit) would get a problem. When I'm going to upgrade my system and give it some more voltage, I would either have to use lower voltage or noisy fans to keep my temps okay... Watercooling is also fun and versatile, why don't give it a shot at it?

yesterday I went to g.L.amour and bought/borrowed some stuff there I needed, thanks a lot to both him and MansoN for driving me home.

So far I've got 1meter of red copper and 70cm of yellow copper + a radiator. here are some webcam pics, my brother snatched the digital cam to go on weekend.

the rad:

my first copper block is a NB block: it's just a testblock and it doesn't need to be high-performing, first thing is to make it work for 100%
drilled the holes today:

Tomorrow I'll get a copper pipe to connect my hose, some decent blades for my electrical saw (handsaw is a pain in the ***) and something to solder the copper pipe

A bigger rad + pump will be shipped this morning
I'll keep you updated, let's hope it turns out well!

aaah, watercooling...

welcome home buddy :hello:

TeuS 30th June 2003 15:54

did some shopping @ Brico, they've really got all accesoires I'm gonna need!

let's see, what I've got here

copper pipe with some tubing

sealing thingies and a splitter

finer bandsaw blades and decent drilling bits

and something to drink

RuB87 30th June 2003 16:27

nice , can't w8 for the results:mad:

Scyver 30th June 2003 17:30

same here, now beginning with easy stuff and I hope when it's september to have decent ideas for bigger stuff and off course top :mad:ness

Keep the pics coming...

TeuS 30th June 2003 18:21

real great

wanted to drill the holes that keep the blocks together, but the thing that tights my drill bit to my drill was gone. Tried without, but the drill got loose every time. went to brico and bought a new one. then the drill broke off because the machine wasn't perfectly adjusted the same. exit testblock, I prolly won't be able to continue the drilling of the hole any more :/

starting another block in five minutes, plenty of copper!

TeuS 30th June 2003 19:22

high quality pics this time :o

drilling the holes went a bit better then the previous time but still haven't mastered it quite yet!

do you use any kind of drill oil ?

no, and my copper gets vewwy hot (+60°)

FreeStyler 30th June 2003 20:27

Put a heatsink on it.
Really.

Anyway, I can see holes in copper, but not quite the pattern you're aiming for.

TeuS 30th June 2003 20:33

I need a dremel to connect the holes

yellow: where the copper is cut away
blue: flow

[Bonbon] 1st July 2003 00:50

what's the size of your drill in mm ?
do you 'pre-drill' with a smaller one ?
i would use some kind of drill oil ,
even the cheapest universal oil will do , your drills will last a lot longer and it will be much easier

i have to say g.l.amour makes some amazing block's, i have one from him and when my new case arrives i will test it ( it has 1 intake and 2 outtakes )

theus what kind of an rad is that, i saw an simular one at procooling.com on an howto

greetz

edit: found it

-drill size doesn't really matter. bigger holes: less work. smaller holes: more work and more performing
-not pre-drilled or so, I know making a hole everywhere before the actual drilling would make a whole world of difference
-I'll get drill oil as soon as I've got money

waiting now for the arrival of rad & pump so I can check the fittings, also have to buy a few more drill bits and tubing. but I've got only 3€ left or so :(

TeuS 3rd July 2003 15:58

bought me a dremel today
crafting away!!

Da_BoKa 4th July 2003 10:58

i think your holes ar a little bit too deep and to wide because there has to be turbelence but that is for an NB so don't worry it dousn't has to cool that much

look here: http://www.overclocking.be/forum/sho...metaalkenni s

nice work

TeuS 8th July 2003 21:16

thursday I'll pick up the copper, cut into pieces and threaded.
barbs of 3/8 10mm were sold out, bought 9mm's for vidcard block and 12mm's for CPU block. So I'll need some kind of adapter. Premade adapters can be bought, but every time you need them you have to drive to a shop + you don't always find the right one + cost money

DIY offcourse!
giving that 10mm copper pipe a use. remember the tubing can be stretched by ~2mm

copper pipe: dia 10
8mm tube: stretched to 10 to fit copper pipe (stretched to 9 to fit vidcard blocks)
12mm tube: put over the 8mm tube
this al tightened by a clamp to be 100% sure, lighter was used to make the tubing easier to stretch and apply

tried it on the tap, looks like it's waterproof :super:

price: 0.4€ :D

RuB87 8th July 2003 21:31

Why isn't this tread called : "HOW TO DO IT THE GETTO WAY!!" ??

:D

TeuS 11th July 2003 22:49

cut up and threaded

CPU block: gonna make the tracks tomorrow
chipset block is +- done
both still need the retention mechanism (CPU: drill holes, chipset: copper plate)

here's a pic

g.l.amour 11th July 2003 23:08

hooah, u make meh proud

the retention should be a no brainer, just drill 4 holes for the motherboard holes.

k, who's next?

TeuS 12th July 2003 19:27

bought a pump today, glued my blocks together with silicone quickly and made a retention mechanism. it doesn't look flashy but I didn't aim for that ;)

it works without any leaks :woot:

TeuS 11th August 2003 23:09

dremel = borked :puke:
covered by warranty, but it'll delay my project

de-assembled my rig and placed it on a senfu DIY OC house (attach). the koolance is now going to be modded a bit more, and the WC loop will be completed

this weekend, I should have my A7N8X deluxe from calantak, I'll watercooll my NB. working now on a reservoir made of a jam pot :^D

I'll complete the CPU & vidcard block asap, I'll make some memblocks too :)

TeuS 11th August 2003 23:12

one

TeuS 11th August 2003 23:12

and two

Evangeliz 12th August 2003 09:50

Wow, very nice.
I wish I could have gotten my copper too
Too bad I could not make it :(

What rad are you using cause I have the same and I want too know what it is ;)

I'm always willing to test your WB :D

I'll have a look at the .pdf later. i had some plexi ready and chopped up to make a res, but I took a jam pot; If I wanted to change the tubing I can just switch the cap of the pot with a new one :)

I've thought well about everything I'm doing, don't think all I'm doing is messing around :p

ModdiN MansoN 12th August 2003 18:21

euh, T, better make sure that the tube of the outlet goes deep enough in the jar, you need to suck the WATER from the res, not the AIR ;)

the jam pot will be placed on it's side, so the pump tube will be at the bottom :*

TeuS 13th August 2003 21:22

radiator, made a hole to put the connector through. I'm currently without dremel, so I just used my drill and a plier to make the hole. how ugly :/

Da_BoKa 14th August 2003 08:14

mine is finished

vegeta 14th August 2003 10:19

@ teus don't forget to put some corrosion stuff, keep in mind you mixing 2 kinds of metal :)

hmmm, forgot about that one. ah well, I'll just open up my reservoir and pour an additive in it.

what additive should I use, antifreeze? I don't think I can get waterwetter + it's bloody expensive
