The Galaxy100 keyboard from Epomaker does tick all the boxes thanks to the inclusion of the Wisteria linear switches which come with a POM+PTFE stem, a PC+PA66 housing and are factory-lubed from the factory. These can be used for both gaming and productivity activities, thanks to the actuation force of 45 gf (similar to the MX Reds),…

The XPOWER Storm 2x32GB DDR5-6000 kit from Silicon Power does perform great and allows a bit of overclocking even when working with the exact same timings and operating voltage. The BX500 4TB drive behaves as expected for a QLC drive and presents the same shortcomings as the P310 drive, meaning that we have a considerably lower TBW versus TLC NAND and a very low write speed when writing directly to QLC, between 10MB/s and 20MB/s, basically lower than regular HDDs.

  • It is easier to turn humans into robots

    July 11, 2018

    .than develop AI

Some startups have worked out it is cheaper and easier to turn humans into robots than develop expensive AI systems.

According to the Wall Street Journal, using a human to do the job lets you skip over a load of technical and business development challenges. It doesn’t scale, obviously, but it allows you to build something and skip the hard part early on.

Gregory Koberger, CEO of ReadMe, who says he has come across a lot of “pseudo-AIs.” It’s essentially prototyping the AI with human beings.

A Wall Street Journal article highlighted how hundreds of third-party app developers that Google allows to access people’s inboxes. Edison Software, artificial intelligence engineers went through the personal email messages of hundreds of users — with their identities redacted — to improve a “smart replies” feature.

The company did not mention that humans would view users’ emails in its privacy policy. The third parties highlighted in the WSJ article are far from the first ones to do it. In 2008, Spinvox, a company that converted voicemails into text messages, was accused of using humans in overseas call centres rather than machines to do its work. In 2016, Bloomberg highlighted the plight of the humans spending 12 hours a day pretending to be chatbots for calendar scheduling services such as X.ai and Clara.

The job was so mind-numbing that human employees said they were looking forward to being replaced by bots.

  • Apple has come up with new way of ripping off fanboys

    July 11, 2018

    I see your true colours

Design over substance outfit Apple has decided that its Apple fanboys are so dim that they will think they are seeing innovation if it releases iPhones in lots of different colours.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a 6.1 inch LCD iPhone model is expected to appear this fall in five colours: gray, white, blue, red, and orange, reports 9to5Mac. Similar to the colorful approach that Apple took with the iPhone 5c, it will be a relatively affordable companion to a 6.5 inch OLED model, pricing each model at approximately $700 and $1,000, respectively. The higher end option will come in black, white, and gold. The gold is expected to be the very same leaked by the FCC earlier this year.

The move is rather clever. Rather than having to spend a fortune in research and development all Apple has to do is change the colour of the case. However it is a moot point if this is going to pay off. Apple’s previous cunning plan of releasing an iPhone which was essentially twice the price of an ordinary one didn’t really work. Sooner or later even Apple fanboys are going to want some technology for their bucks.

  • First flying car goes on show

    July 11, 2018

So now you can have a flying car stop going on about it… still no word on jetpacks

Later this month, the “world’s first flying car production model”, the PAL-V Liberty, will take flight at Farnborough International Airshow, on July 16.

The biennial public airshow is a trade exhibition for aerospace and defence industries, and this year it will host the PAL-V Liberty and its aviation debut.

PAL-V Liberty is the name of the futuristic aircraft that resembles the offspring of a car and helicopter, however the Dutch makers of the machine describe it as a gyroplane.

“The PAL-V is not a helicopter. In flying mode the PAL-V is a gyroplane which means its blades are powered by the wind. As long there as is airflow they rotate and act like a continuously open parachute.”

The flying car is getting close to completion, with the company saying it’s currently going through the last step of the certification process: compliance demonstration.

“It takes a lot of testing to prove that the PAL-V Liberty complies with the regulations”, said Mike Stekelenburg, PAL-V’s Chief Engineer, explaining that the design philosophy of using proven technology, rather than those still requiring new regulations “enables a realistic and imminent first product delivery date”.

Robert Dingemanse, CEO of PAL-V, stated: “The production model is the moment of truth. The moment where the wall between fiction and facts is torn down” also noting that “Once full certification is granted in 2020 we will hand over the keys of the PAL-V Liberty to our first customers.”

And yes, there are already pioneer clients gaining experience at flying schools in preparation for deliveries commencing in 2020.

  • Raspberry Pi 3 Review

    July 11, 2018

Some time ago we already have reviewed the first Raspberry Pi. With the exception of sophisticated multimedia applications, this could meet all our requirements for a single-board computer. Meanwhile, miniaturization is proceeding. Therefore we would like to take a closer look at the Raspberry Pi 3. This is not shrunk by the board size, but offers more features and performance than the previous models. A further advantage should not go unmentioned at this point: According to current knowledge, the Raspberry Pi 3 is immune to the security holes Meltdown and Spectre! We now find out on OCinside.de what this small miracle of performance can do.
