The BX500 4TB drive behaves as expected for a QLC drive and presents the same shortcomings as the P310 drive, meaning that we have a considerably lower TBW versus TLC NAND and a very low write speed when writing directly to QLC, between 10MB/s and 20MB/s, basically lower than regular HDDs.

  • More Ryzen 3 2300X and Ryzen 5 2500X details appear

    July 8, 2018

    Both are good overclockers

While we have already seen some details, the fresh leak regarding AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 3 2300X and Ryzen 5 2500X SKUs have shown up online, revealing a lot more details as well as an impressive overclocking potential.

AMD already released some of the SKUs in its Ryzen 2000-series lineup but budget-oriented buyers are still waiting for two key SKUs, the Ryzen 3 2300X and the Ryzen 5 2500X, and it appears these will be quite interesting chips, offering great value for money as well as come with a rather impressive overclocking potential, at least according to a fresh leak from XFastest.com site.

XFastest.com managed to get their hands on each of these CPUs confirming mostly all the specifications as well as putting them both under air and LN2 cooling for some overclocking action.

The Ryzen 3 2300X is a quad-core chip without AMD simultaneous multithreading (SMT), so it is stuck with only four threads. It works at base 3.5GHz clock with Boost of up to 4.0GHZ and comes with 10MB of total cache (2MB L2 + 8MB L3). The Ryzen 5 2500X is a bit more interesting as although this is also a quad-core 65W TDP SKU, it comes with enabled SMT for eight threads and works at slightly higher 3.6GHz base clock with the same 4.0GHz Boost. It also comes with 10MB of cache (2MB L2 + 8MB L3).

Since these are AMD’s 2nd generation chips based on 12nm manufacturing process and AMD’s improved Zen+ architecture, they both should support XFR2 and Precision Boost 2 technologies.

XFastest also had a chance to overclock these two SKUs hitting a maximum clock of 4.3GHz under air. This is a good 300MHz overclock which should significantly improve performance and it is quite an important deal in that part of the market, where the value is important and buyers are squeezing out the last possible drop of performance.

Under LN2, these two SKUs are even more impressive, hitting a bootable clock of 5.65GHz, so extreme overclockers will have a blast with these two SKUs.

AMD did not give out a specific date for the launch of these two SKUs but they should start appearing in retail/e-tail sometimes in the next few months, alongside the new B450-chipset motherboards which have already started to list in some shops.

  • EA’s Anthem gets new 20-minute gameplay trailer

    July 8, 2018

    From the same E3 demo

Electronic Arts and Bioware have released a new 20-minute gameplay trailer for the upcoming Anthem game, showing a bit more details with some of the features explained by game’s lead producer, Ben Irving.

The new 20-minute gameplay is taken from the same E3 demo that we saw earlier and shows four Freelancers completing the “Scars & Villainy” mission, as well as gives a bit more details on combat, traveling mechanics, as well as teamwork.

The video is narrated by Ben Irving, game’s lead producer, which gives a bit more details about all the features of the game and what to expect when it launches, on February 22nd, 2019.

EA has previously confirmed that there will be no loot boxes or pay-to-power microtransactions, but will rather stick to just cosmetic ones. EA also noted that there will be a big focus on singleplayer, something that was plaguing the Destiny game.

  • The BeOS file system, an OS geek retrospective

    July 8, 2018

It’s a bit of a slow news week in technology this week due the US celebrating Independence Day this past 4 July, so Ars decided to repost this article about BFS, and I’m nothing if not a sucker for BeOS content, so here it goes.

The Be operating system file system, known simply as BFS, is the file system for the Haiku, BeOS, and SkyOS operating systems. When it was created in the late ’90s as part of the ill-fated BeOS project, BFS’s ahead-of-its-time feature set immediately struck the fancy OS geeks. That feature set includes: A 64-bit address space Use of journaling Highly multithreaded reading Support of database-like extended file attributes Optimization for streaming file access A dozen years later, the legendary BFS still merits exploration – so we’re diving in today, starting with some filesystem basics and moving on to a discussion of the above features. We also chatted with two people intimately familiar with the OS: the person who developed BFS for Be and the developer behind the open-source version of BFS.
    A good read.

  • GIGABYTE Launches CMT4030-Series PCIe 3.0 x8 and PCIe 3.0 x16 SSD Risers

    July 8, 2018

GIGABYTE B2B has launched two PCIe riser cards for M.2 SSDs designed to build ultra-fast storage sub-systems consisting of multiple M.2 drives. The CMT4030-series risers will be available through B2B channels, hence, to makers of servers, workstations, and high-end PCs rather than to DIY enthusiasts.

Neither of the GIGABYTE CMT4030-series cards use any PCIe switches and therefore rely on PCIe bifurcation supported by CPU or PCH (i.e., they will not work on cheap systems that have limited PCIe bifurcation capabilities) as well as on software RAID technologies supported by the platform. Both risers support M.2-2280 and M.2-22110 drives, they are equipped with their own thermal sensors and advanced VRMs to ensure quality power supply to SSDs.

GIGABYTE’s CMT4032 is a low-profile PCIe 3.0 x8 riser card that supports two M.2 drives and comes with an aluminum heat spreader. This card may be used inside higher-end consumer systems to build high-performance storage systems featuring two SSDs as well as a 6.5 GB/s throughput.

The CMT4034 low-profile PCIe 3.0 x16 riser card carries four M.2 drives on two PCBs that also has a passive cooling system. This riser is officially aimed only at GIGABYTE’s Purley generation servers, so their work on systems based on other Intel platforms (X299, X370, etc.) is not guaranteed. As for performance, maximum throughput supported by a PCIe 3.0 x16 slot is around 15.75 GB/s.

Pricing of GIGABYTE’s CMT4032 and CMT4034 SSDs risers is unknown, but since we are dealing with B2B products, it will vary depending on volumes and negotiations. The manufacturer plans to offer its 4-way Aorus PCIe x16 M.2 SSD riser for high-end desktops at some point in the future, but details are unclear.
