AMD-Based Dell Desktops to Come in September

Dell Inc., the world’s largest maker of personal computers, said in a conference call with financial analysts that it would release desktops based on microprocessors from Advanced Micro Devices in September, which may mean that the company is targeting back-to-school season with such machines. In addition, the firm said it would use AMD Opteron processors in 2-way “enterprise” servers.

For years people have hoped to see Athlon 64 in Dell machines to speed up gaming and provide better value for money compared to the Pentium D. Now that Intel has regained the performance crown with the Core 2 desktop CPUs, Dell is shipping AMD systems.

DOH!

haha It really is the worst timing for the switchover. My only guess is that they plan on making the now cheap X2's their value chips instead of Celerons.
